A 2025 report describes online criticism of a rainbow Batman suit associated with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. The key context: the report says the game explains that the costume first appeared in a DC comic in 1957, 21 years before the first raising of Gilbert Baker’s rainbow flag in 1978. That reported comic-era origin does not establish that the suit was created as a Pride reference.
Why are people criticizing the rainbow Batman suit?
An August 26, 2025 report by MDZ describes online criticism of a rainbow costume associated with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. The report does not quantify the reaction, so it cannot establish that criticism was widespread or representative of players generally.
The “going woke” framing treats the rainbow design as a contemporary political statement. The historical context reported alongside the criticism complicates that reading: according to MDZ’s account of explanatory text in the game, the costume dates to 1957 and Batman wore it to divert attention from Robin’s broken arm. The source does not independently verify the original comic issue, so the date and explanation should be understood as reported details rather than confirmed directly from the comic.
How much older is the suit than the Pride flag?
MDZ gives 1957 as the costume’s comic debut. The GLBT Historical Society, the U.S. National Park Service and the U.S. National Archives document June 25, 1978, as the date Baker’s original rainbow flags were first raised in San Francisco. The difference between those years is 21.

| Object | Date | Documented or reported origin and purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Rainbow Batman costume | 1957, according to the 2025 MDZ report | MDZ says game text attributes it to a DC comic and says Batman wore it to distract attention from Robin’s broken arm. The original issue was not independently verified. |
| Baker’s original rainbow flag | June 25, 1978 | Baker and volunteers made two flags for San Francisco Gay Freedom Day; one was raised at United Nations Plaza, according to the GLBT Historical Society, the National Park Service and the National Archives. |
The comparison is useful, but it has limits: a rainbow on a fictional costume is not, by itself, evidence that its creators intended it as a reference to the Pride flag. Here, the reported in-game explanation points to a disguise tied to Robin’s injury, while the flag has a separately documented community history.
What did the original Pride flag look like?
The familiar six-stripe flag is not the original version. Baker and volunteers created an eight-stripe design for San Francisco’s 1978 Gay Freedom Day. The GLBT Historical Society says Baker removed the hot-pink stripe in 1979 because matching flag fabric was unavailable, then removed turquoise to make an even number of stripes for display. Its history of the rainbow flag records Baker’s description of the symbol as a collective vision.

The National Park Service likewise describes Baker and friends making two flags for the June 25, 1978 parade. The National Archives records that one original flag was raised at United Nations Plaza that day. Together, these institutional accounts support the 1978 date for the flag’s first public raising, distinct from the 1957 date attributed to the Batman costume by the later report.

No. LEGO announced Everyone Is Awesome on May 20, 2021, as a separate display model inspired by the rainbow flag. The set has 346 pieces and 11 monochrome minifigures. LEGO Vice President of Design Matthew Ashton said: “I wanted to create a model that symbolises inclusivity and celebrates everyone, no matter how they identify or who they love.”

That announcement documents an explicitly inclusivity-focused LEGO product; it does not establish the intent behind a Batman costume that MDZ says originated in a 1957 comic. The two rainbow designs have different reported origins and should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
