Director Wes Ball described both in a May 9, 2024 interview with Gizmodo / io9.
Why were there real leeches on set?
Ball said that nearly every animal shown in the film was computer generated, but the leeches encountered by crew members were real. He described one field location as a “leech field.” Sometimes a crew member did not realize a leech was attached until later, when they noticed blood or saw it on their skin.
Ball called the experience “one of the many sacrifices we made for the audience.” His account makes the leeches an incidental production hazard, not creatures added to the story as a visual effect. The interview does not identify the species, give the location’s geography, or describe safety procedures.
Why did the apes have eagles?
Ball said he wanted to avoid simply repeating the familiar human relationship with dogs. In his imagined society, the apes’ relationship with eagles offered a distinctive alternative—and a striking image for the film.

- Generations in the future following Caesar?s reign, apes are living harmoniously as the dominant species ? and humans are living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
The eagle idea also led to a ritual involving a climb to an eagle’s eggs. Ball said the audience could infer aspects of this unfamiliar culture from what it sees, rather than having every custom explained in dialogue. The eagles and ritual are creative world-building choices, not claims about real ape behavior or history.

Ball described the apes in this installment as moving beyond the Stone Age depiction of earlier films and into a Bronze Age society. That is his shorthand for the fictional culture’s development, not a factual description of nonhuman apes.

He also connected the time jump after Caesar’s death to a world where knowledge has been lost and rediscovered. In Ball’s account, Raka and Proximus Caesar represent divergent interpretations of Caesar’s legacy, while Noa’s journey gives those competing ideas room to shape what comes next. The interview presents this as the director’s intended story context.

- Leeches: a real, unexpected challenge for people working at a field location.
- Eagles: an intentional choice that helped give the apes’ society its own visual identity and customs.
