Why did Kim Kardashian look so different?
The look was a temporary editorial transformation, not a permanent change in Kardashian’s appearance. For the shoot she wore platinum-blonde hair and bleached eyebrows, details that helped prompt descriptions of her as nearly or completely unrecognisable. A contemporary report also noted the lightened hair and brows. E! News reported on the look at the time.
In the Interview conversation, Kardashian said she was dyeing her hair blonde again and expected to keep it that way for a while, then return to dark hair in the fall because she did not want to damage it. Her own explanation makes clear that the blonde styling was a limited-period choice.

What did she wear on the cover?
The cover paired the striking beauty look with denim worn low and a jockstrap. Interview’s cover caption credits the trompe-l’oeil leather denim jacket and pants to Bottega Veneta. The wardrobe notes identify the jockstrap only as “Stylist’s Own”; they do not name its brand. The credits do not establish that the outfit was an endorsement.

Asked by Ottenberg what it was like to wear one, Kardashian answered, “Oh my god. I loved it.” She said she and Cohen “just vibe so well” during shoots, and recalled that the team initially said, “No jockstrap.” Kardashian said she pushed for it and was glad they went with the idea.
She also offered her own perspective on how she came across in the images: “I feel really good in my own skin these days, so maybe that comes through.” In the same interview, she advised, “Never stop speaking your truth, and never stop fighting for what you believe in.” These remarks are her personal reflections, not objective claims about how the photographs should be interpreted.
