In a 2024 interview, she described them as young people with different personalities and morals and recalled thinking: “This isn’t working. This isn’t for me.” That is Itsines’s account of the breakup, not an explanation of Pearce’s private motives.
Why did Kayla Itsines and Tobi Pearce break up?
Itsines discussed the separation on Mamamia’s No Filter, in an episode published on 17 March 2024 with guest host Kate Langbroek. PerthNow quoted her saying: “We are different people with different morals. It works so well in business … but we were very young.” She also recalled waking up and deciding, “This isn’t working. This isn’t for me.” PerthNow’s report summarized her remarks on 20 March 2024.
Itsines described herself as creative and focused on understanding women and running boot camps, while calling Pearce level-headed and logical. She said those differences complemented their work but did not suit them as a couple. These are her characterizations of their dynamic; the public account does not establish Pearce’s own full explanation. The sources do not substantiate claims of infidelity, blame, or a specific private conflict.
When did they separate?
The couple announced their separation in August 2020, after eight years together. Their announcement was not a new breakup in 2024; Itsines spoke about the earlier decision in the 2024 interview. In the statement reported at the time, they said they would remain friends, raise their daughter together, and continue as business partners. Marie Claire Australia reported the announcement on 21 August 2020.

How did they remain connected after the engagement ended?
Co-parenting their daughter
Itsines and Pearce’s daughter, Arna, was born in 2019. Their separation statement said their friendship remained strong as they parented her together. Itsines’s account of the romantic breakup should be kept distinct from their stated commitment to co-parenting.
Continuing their business partnership
The pair had built the Bikini Body Guides and the Sweat fitness business together. Published accounts differ on the precise launch dates of the guides and app, so it is safer to describe the business’s development without assigning one definitive year to each milestone. Forbes Australia’s February 2024 profile reported that Sweat was sold to iFIT in 2021 and later bought back by Itsines and Pearce. The profile described Pearce as a passive investor and Itsines as leading the brand at that time. Their personal separation therefore did not immediately end their professional relationship.

What is—and is not—known about the breakup
The explanation most directly supported by public remarks is Itsines’s own: their contrasting traits made for a productive business partnership but, in her view, not a compatible romantic relationship. Her interview provides a retrospective account from one partner; it does not establish that both viewed the breakup in the same way. No breakup-specific statistic or formal study explains their decision, and company financial figures do not answer why they separated.
