Katy Perry posted an edited version of Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s Benedictine College commencement speech on June 1, 2024, the first day of Pride Month. By selecting and rearranging excerpts, the clip made Butker appear to celebrate women’s career ambitions and LGBTQ+ inclusion. Perry captioned it: “Fixed this for my girls, my graduates, and my gays — you can do anything.” The affirmative message belonged to Perry’s edit and framing, not to Butker’s original speech.
What Perry’s edited clip showed
According to CBS Sports, the video spliced together excerpts from Butker’s address. In the new sequence, he appeared to praise women graduates, ask about career promotions, predict successful careers, and close with a Pride Month greeting: “I want to say Happy Pride Month to all of you, and congratulations Class of 2024!”
The arrangement changed the apparent meaning of the remarks. It was an edited excerpt, not an unaltered passage or a new statement from Butker endorsing Pride or women’s career advancement. The Independent also described the rearrangement as changing the meaning of his comments.
What Butker said in the original address
Butker delivered the commencement speech at Benedictine College, a private Catholic college in Atchison, Kansas, on May 11, 2024. The Associated Press reported that he received a standing ovation. Its account of the roughly 20-minute address describes remarks about women’s roles, Catholicism, Pride Month, abortion, and politics; the excerpts below are reported portions, not a full transcript.

- He said he expected most women graduates to be more excited about marriage and children than careers, and described homemaking as an important title.
- He referred to Pride as a “deadly sin sort of pride.”
Those reported remarks provide the contrast with the sequence Perry assembled: the original speech’s comments about women and Pride were not an endorsement of the message conveyed by the edited clip.
How the NFL responded
The NFL distinguished Butker’s remarks from the league’s position. Jonathan Beane, the league’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, said: “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity.” He added: “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization.”
