Kapil Talwalkar, who played court clerk Neil on NBC’s Night Court revival, did not return as a series regular for Season 2. TVLine reported before the season premiered that the show wanted to move in a different creative direction, citing an unnamed source—not an on-record statement from NBC, the producers or Talwalkar.
What happened to Neil on Night Court?
Talwalkar appeared in all 16 episodes of Season 1, but was not part of the Season 2 regular cast. The news was reported on December 28, 2023, ahead of Season 2’s January 2, 2024 premiere. It was a pre-season cast change, not a midseason exit.

TVLine, citing an unnamed source, reported that the show wanted “to take things in a different direction creatively, with lots of different characters and personalities, more in the vein of the original Night Court.” The report also said the cast and producers were grateful to have worked with Talwalkar. That explanation is attributed to the unnamed source; the report did not present it as a public statement from the network or Talwalkar. TVLine’s December 28, 2023 report.
Who became the new court clerk in Season 2?
Nyambi Nyambi joined the cast as Wyatt Shaw, described as the court’s new clerk. That establishes a new clerk character, but the available reporting does not establish that Wyatt was Neil’s direct in-story replacement. Gary Anthony Williams, introduced as Flobert in the holiday episode, was also reported as recurring in Season 2. A Season 2 cast interview and series description identifies Neil and Wyatt Shaw.

How does Talwalkar’s exit fit the show’s cast changes?
The revival’s February 2023 Season 2 renewal announcement listed Talwalkar among its original regular cast alongside Melissa Rauch, John Larroquette, India de Beaufort and Lacretta. Warner Bros. Television Group’s announcement also called the premiere the No. 1 broadcast comedy premiere of the 2022–23 season in both the 18–49 demographic and total viewers; it did not give an audience count or percentage.
There were further ensemble changes later. In November 2024, Rauch discussed de Beaufort’s departure and Wendie Malick’s expanded Season 3 role as a natural evolution of the cast, telling TheWrap, “It’s sort of inherent in the DNA of the show to bring in fresh voices and perspectives and characters, and that’s just what happened here.” Her comments concerned those later changes, not Talwalkar’s Season 2 departure.
