Kairi Sane was absent from WWE programming in late 2024 and early 2025 because she injured a ligament in her thumb and had surgery. WWE explained her absence on screen with an attack angle, but Sane’s injury was the real-world reason. She returned to Raw in 2025; her later WWE departure in 2026 was a separate development, and no official reason for that departure is established by the cited reporting.
Why was Kairi Sane off WWE programming?
Sane said she tore a ligament in her thumb, underwent surgery and needed time to recover. F4WOnline reported that her last match before the absence was a Raw tag match with IYO SKY against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez on December 2, 2024. WWE then used an attack by Pure Fusion Collective to write her out of the on-screen story. The attack was a scripted explanation for viewers; the thumb injury was the real-world cause. F4WOnline’s April 13, 2025 report describes both the injury update and the television write-off.
What happened to her thumb?
On April 13, 2025, Sane described her recovery in a social media post reproduced by F4WOnline: “Three months ago, I tore a ligament in my thumb and couldn’t even open a bottle cap. Now, I’ve fully regained my grip strength—and I’m even stronger than before.” She also thanked Dr. Hirsch, who performed her surgery. That is Sane’s own account of her condition and recovery, not an independent medical assessment; the available reporting does not establish a more specific diagnosis.
When did Kairi Sane return to WWE?
Secondary coverage reported that Sane returned to Raw on May 19, 2025, in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. WWE’s official results confirm she was wrestling on Raw by July 7, when she defeated Roxanne Perez and reunited on screen with Asuka afterward. WWE’s Kairi Sane profile also lists later 2025 highlights, including Asuka helping Sane defeat IYO SKY. The return ended the injury-related absence.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was her later WWE departure connected to the injury?
No connection is established. F4WOnline reported in April and May 2026 that Sane was among WWE’s post-WrestleMania 42 cuts, after she had returned and wrestled during 2025. The same reporting attributed to a Wrestling Observer account the claim that WWE believed she might want to move back to Japan at some point. That is reported speculation about WWE’s belief, not a confirmed cause. AJ Styles said he did not know why she exited, and the cited coverage does not establish an official WWE explanation. F4WOnline’s WWE coverage reported on the cuts and related comments.
