He said he had been unhappy near the end of his previous tour, wanted to work through “deep rooted issues,” and needed to put his family and health first. He did not announce a retirement: he said music still mattered to him and that he intended to return with an album.
Why did Justin Bieber say he needed a break?
Bieber said he had spent his teenage years and early twenties touring, and that he was unhappy near the end of his last tour. He felt he could not give audiences the lively, energetic concert they had paid to see. In the statement reproduced by The FADER on March 26, 2019, he wrote that he was “unable emotionally” to provide that experience near the tour’s end.
He also said he wanted to address what he called “deep rooted issues.” Rather than focus only on performing and releasing music, he wanted time to work on his personal well-being and relationships.
What did he say about his family and health?
Bieber said he wanted to sustain his marriage and become the father he hoped to be. He also made his priorities explicit: “Music is very important to me but Nothing comes before my family and my health,” as quoted by British Vogue. His explanation framed the hiatus as a personal decision about health and family, as well as his ability to perform.

Was Justin Bieber quitting music?
No. His 2019 post described a break, not retirement. He said music remained important to him and told fans he planned to return with an album. The announcement was a response to questions about when new music would arrive; it did not give a return date.
How the break relates to the Purpose Tour cancellation
In 2017, Bieber cancelled the final 14 dates of the Purpose Tour. Billboard Canada reports that he cited “unforeseen circumstances” at the time. That earlier cancellation is separate from the reasons he gave in 2019: the available accounts do not establish that the 2017 decision was caused by the same specific personal issues or feelings he later described.

What later touring comments do—and do not—show
In an April 15, 2026 report, Capital said Bieber had performed at Coachella and that a world tour had not been confirmed as of its article. Reporting his Twitch remarks, Capital quoted him saying touring can reach a point where he is “just super burnt out”; it also said he discussed the possibility of doing spot dates instead of a long tour. Those comments describe a later, time-bound touring situation. They do not change what he said in 2019 or establish a current tour commitment.
