Julia Ormond said she was seeking personal accountability and hoped her decision would help bring wider change. In an October 2023 interview, she also described fearing professional backlash and losing future work. Her lawsuit alleged that Harvey Weinstein assaulted her in 1995 and that talent agency CAA, Disney and Miramax failed to protect or warn her. Those allegations are not findings of fact. As of the New York appellate court’s August 2025 decision, claims against CAA had survived a motion to dismiss; Disney and Miramax’s appeals were withdrawn after a settlement agreement was submitted, with its terms undisclosed.
Why did Julia Ormond speak out?
In an interview published by Rolling Stone on October 9, 2023, Ormond said: “I am seeking accountability for myself and hoping that will bring further change.” She also described being reluctant to speak publicly because she feared backlash and losing future work.
Ormond’s explanation was about both her own case and the conditions she hoped would change. She said she wanted greater accountability from people and organizations with power in the entertainment industry, and hoped that a better understanding of workplace risks would lead to more protection for others.
What did Ormond allege in her lawsuit?
Ormond filed a civil complaint in New York County on October 4, 2023, under New York’s Adult Survivors Act. The complaint alleges that Weinstein sexually assaulted her in December 1995 after a business dinner connected to her work. It says she was represented by CAA and had a production agreement with Miramax, and alleges that CAA, Disney and Miramax failed to warn or protect her.

The complaint further alleges that Ormond told CAA agents Bryan Lourd and Kevin Huvane about the assault. These are claims made by Ormond in a civil pleading; a complaint is not independent proof that the alleged events occurred.
How did Weinstein and CAA respond?
When the suit was filed, Weinstein’s attorney Imran Ansari told the Associated Press that Weinstein “categorically denies the allegations made against him by Julia Ormond” and was prepared to defend himself. CAA said it took allegations seriously and had compassion for Ormond, while calling her claims against the agency baseless.

The Los Angeles Times also reported CAA’s denial and the agency’s statement that an investigation found nothing to support Ormond’s claims. Ormond’s counsel disputed the significance of that review. These were the parties’ reported positions in October 2023, not conclusions reached by a court.
What has the court decided?
In August 2025, New York’s Appellate Division, First Department, affirmed the denial of CAA’s motion to dismiss. The court concluded that Ormond’s complaint sufficiently pleaded negligence and breach-of-fiduciary-duty claims, including allegations of a special relationship and duty of care, notice, and causation. That ruling means the claims against CAA could proceed beyond the dismissal stage. It did not determine whether the assault or the alleged failures occurred as claimed, or whether CAA is liable.

Disney and Miramax had also appealed the denial of their motions to dismiss. According to the court’s opinion, they submitted an executed settlement agreement on July 9, 2025, and withdrew their appeals. The court treated those appeals as moot, so it did not decide their arguments. The opinion does not disclose the settlement terms.
