Josh Brolin says a friend’s repeated observation that he and Peter Dinklage looked alike and had big heads gave him the idea to call Dinklage and pitch a project: the two actors as twin brothers. That joke became the starting point for Brothers, a 2024 action comedy about criminal siblings whose family bond keeps pulling them back together.
How the “big heads” idea started
In Total Film’s November 2024 feature, Dinklage recalled Brolin saying a friend had noticed that the pair had “the biggest heads in showbusiness” and suggesting they play twins. Brolin described the concept as loosely based on his family. The observation was a casting spark, not the premise of the entire film.
In an October 14, 2024 interview with ABC7 Chicago, Dinklage put it this way: “Josh called me out of the blue; I thought I had blocked his number, but apparently he found a way to call me and he had this idea we should play these twin brothers because we have very large craniums.”
Brolin said he had heard for a couple of years that the two looked similar. As he told ABC7: “When somebody says you and Peter Dinklage look sort of alike, you have big heads, you kind of look similar, after hearing that for a couple of years you go, why aren’t you doing something about this?”

What Brothers is about
Brothers follows Moke and Jady, criminal twin brothers played by Brolin and Dinklage. Raised by their career-criminal mother, played by Glenn Close, they reunite after Jady gets out of prison. Moke is trying to leave crime behind for suburban family life, but a final job sends the brothers on a chaotic road trip.
The resemblance may have prompted the pitch, but the story’s relationship is about a harder-to-escape connection. Dinklage told ABC7, “I just like the fact that they’re so similar they can’t avoid each other.” Brolin described the family dynamic as an inevitability: “I like the idea that blood is forever and you can’t get away from it, even if you want to, and I love the inevitability factor, it’s like you’re stuck with me so we might as well rob places.”

The short answer
Brolin says a friend’s recurring comment about his and Dinklage’s similar appearance and large heads prompted him to call Dinklage with the twin-brother idea. The actors then turned that initial joke into a crime comedy centered on two brothers bound by family as much as by their criminal past.
