The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) defended that contest decision; Sweden’s prosecution authority later dropped its separate criminal investigation for lack of evidence. The investigation’s closure did not reverse the disqualification.
What happened to Joost Klein at Eurovision?
Klein represented the Netherlands with “Europapa.” After his semi-final performance on Thursday, May 9, 2024, a female member of the production crew made a complaint concerning an incident. Two days later, the EBU announced that Klein would not compete in the Grand Final, removing the Netherlands’ entry from the show. The Associated Press reported the announcement and the competing accounts.

What did the EBU and AVROTROS say?
The EBU’s account
In an updated statement on May 14, the EBU described Klein’s conduct as “threatening behaviour” and said public accounts did not correspond with statements shared with the organization and Swedish police by staff and witnesses. That characterization was the EBU’s account, not a criminal finding. Eurovoix reported the EBU’s update.
AVROTROS’s account
The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS said the incident took place after Klein’s performance when he was filmed despite agreements. This is the broadcaster’s description; the public reporting cited here does not independently establish the disputed details. The EBU also said the incident did not involve another performer or delegation member, countering speculation that circulated during the contest. The Associated Press covered the parties’ accounts.

Was the investigation dropped?
Yes. In August 2024, Sweden’s prosecution authority dropped its investigation for lack of evidence. Klein welcomed the closure, while the EBU continued to defend its Eurovision decision. The outcome of the criminal investigation and the EBU’s eligibility decision were separate: the authority’s decision to drop its investigation did not restore Klein to the contest. NOS reported the investigation’s closure, and Euronews reported responses from Klein and the EBU.

The available public reporting establishes the sequence of the complaint, the EBU’s disqualification, the parties’ differing descriptions, and the later closure of Sweden’s investigation. It does not provide a complete independent reconstruction of the incident or establish disputed physical details as fact. The EBU’s description should therefore be understood as its stated basis for its contest decision, not as a finding of criminal guilt.
