John Cena said he tapped out with a smile because he wanted the ending to portray struggle, connection with the audience and peaceful acceptance. Gunther defeated him by submission in Cena’s final WWE match, but Cena described the finish as a story told through the match—not a literal explanation for why his character tapped.
What happened in Cena’s final WWE match
At Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025, Gunther defeated Cena by submission at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. WWE’s match recap says Cena escaped an earlier Sleeper Hold, hit another Attitude Adjustment, and was caught in the hold again. After Gunther kept squeezing, Cena tapped out. WWE’s event announcement had named the arena as the venue and Peacock as the event’s exclusive stream at the time; that announcement does not establish current streaming availability. Why did John Cena tap out with a smile?
In a December 18, 2025 interview with Cody Rhodes, reported and transcribed by Fightful, Cena said the final stretch was meant to communicate with the audience through the match. He described his character struggling, connecting with the people who mattered to him, and then accepting that it was time to take his last breath peacefully.
As Fightful transcribed Cena’s explanation: “We’re just in a sleeper hold, but we’re having that conversation with the audience.” He also said, “I think it’s time to take that last breath,” and described the image he wanted the ending to evoke as: “This person died peacefully.” These are Cena’s descriptions of the emotional story he intended the finish to tell; they are not a literal cause of the tap-out.

What did Triple H say about the decision?
After the match, WWE creative chief Paul “Triple H” Levesque said Cena had long emphasized leaving WWE better than he found it, and that Levesque would do what he believed was right for the business and the industry. The Sporting News report covers his public explanation.
That is Levesque’s stated rationale for the booking choice. It is distinct from Cena’s explanation of the performance and its intended meaning. Public comments do not disclose the complete private discussion behind the finish, so suggested motives such as building Gunther’s character should not be treated as confirmed reasons.

What the finish meant—and what it does not establish
The documented facts are straightforward: Gunther won with a Sleeper Hold, and Cena said the smile and tap were meant to express a final goodbye and peaceful acceptance after struggle. Levesque publicly framed the decision as what he believed best for WWE and the industry. Neither statement provides a full account of every internal creative consideration.
