Jodie Foster said she turned down an offer to play Princess Leia in Star Wars because she was already under contract for a Disney movie and did not want to abandon that commitment. She described it as a conflict—not as a rejection of the role on artistic grounds.
Why did Jodie Foster turn down Princess Leia?
Foster explained the decision during a January 17, 2024 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Asked whether she had been offered Leia, she confirmed it and said, “They were going for a younger Princess Leia but I had a conflict.” She then clarified: “I was doing a Disney movie and I just didn’t want to pull out of the Disney movie because I was already under contract.” UPI reported her explanation on January 18, 2024; The Guardian also quoted the remarks on January 19.
Her account makes the reason a prior contractual commitment. It does not establish that she disliked Star Wars or turned Leia down because of creative objections.
Which Disney movie was she committed to?
Foster did not name the Disney movie in the reported interview remarks. The Guardian suggested it was “almost certainly” Freaky Friday, but that is an inference, not an identification Foster confirmed.

Disney’s D23 reference page lists Foster in the cast of Freaky Friday and gives its initial Los Angeles release as December 17, 1976, followed by a general release on January 21, 1977. Those details make the film a plausible connection, but D23 does not link Foster’s contract for it to the Leia offer.

Foster reflected on the casting without claiming to know how her version would have turned out: “And they did an amazing job. I don’t know how good I would have been. I might have had different hair. I might have gone with a pineapple.” Her joke leaves the imagined alternative just that: an unknown, not evidence of how the performance or films would have changed.
