The case was voluntarily dismissed before trial on January 25, 2018, but contemporaneous reports did not disclose why the plaintiffs dropped it or whether they reached a settlement. The dismissal was not a court ruling that established guilt or innocence.
Why was Jim Carrey sued over Cathriona White’s death?
White’s mother, Brigid Sweetman, and her estranged husband, Mark Burton, brought wrongful-death claims against Carrey in 2016. They alleged that he had obtained prescription medication using a false identity and provided it to White. Those were allegations made by the plaintiffs, not facts established at trial. The Associated Press’s contemporaneous account of the dismissal summarizes the claims and the case’s outcome: CBS News, Associated Press report.
The lawsuits also included allegations that Carrey exposed White to sexually transmitted diseases without warning her. Carrey denied responsibility for her death and countersued, alleging that the plaintiffs were using their claims to coerce a settlement. The Los Angeles Times reported on the competing claims in September 2017: Los Angeles Times. Neither side’s claims should be treated as a court finding.
What happened to Cathriona White?
White died in September 2015 at age 30 following a prescription-drug overdose. The Associated Press reported that coroner’s officials ruled her death a suicide. That reported cause and manner of death are distinct from the civil plaintiffs’ allegations about Carrey: the reports do not establish that a court found he caused her death.

Why was the lawsuit dismissed?
The documented answer is that the plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed the consolidated wrongful-death case on January 25, 2018, before trial. The contemporaneous Associated Press and City News Service reports describe the dismissal but do not state why the plaintiffs chose to drop the claims. MyNewsLA specifically reported that the filing did not say whether a settlement had been reached: MyNewsLA.
It is therefore not established by these reports that the case ended because of a settlement, a payment, or a particular motive. A voluntary dismissal is a procedural end to that lawsuit; without a trial or a reported merits ruling, it does not prove the allegations or resolve them in Carrey’s favor.

Did Carrey’s countersuit also end?
Carrey filed a countersuit against the plaintiffs. In 2018, reporting said he filed court papers seeking partial dismissal of that countersuit as well. The available contemporaneous coverage does not establish the full terms or motive behind those filings. It would be inaccurate to treat the countersuit as a judicial finding that the plaintiffs acted improperly.
