Jeremy Clarkson hit Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon during a 4 March 2015 location shoot at Simonstone Hall Hotel in North Yorkshire. The BBC’s investigation described the encounter as an “unprovoked physical and verbal attack.” Contemporary reporting linked the immediate dispute to food after filming, but the available evidence does not establish seven separate motives—or make the reported dispute an excuse for violence.
What happened between Jeremy Clarkson and Oisin Tymon?
The incident took place while the Top Gear team was working on location. The BBC investigation summary says Clarkson reported to BBC management on 9 March that he had been involved in a physical and verbal incident with Tymon at Simonstone Hall Hotel. The BBC Trust’s complaints bulletin dates the incident itself to 4 March 2015.
The BBC investigation, led by Ken MacQuarrie, characterized it as an “unprovoked physical and verbal attack.” That institutional finding is more specific than describing the event as a disagreement between colleagues.
Was food the reason Clarkson hit his producer?
Contemporary reporting connected the confrontation to a dispute about food after filming. That account offers context for the immediate argument, but it should be treated as reported context—not as a definitive explanation of Clarkson’s motives. The official investigation summary confirms the incident and its characterization; it does not establish a psychological explanation or a list of seven causes.

So the headline’s “7 reasons” framing overstates what the evidence supports. There is a reported immediate dispute, but no substantiated basis for dividing it into seven independent reasons.

The BBC did not renew Clarkson’s contract
On 25 March 2015, the BBC announced that it would not renew Clarkson’s Top Gear contract following its investigation. This was an employment decision by the broadcaster; it should not be confused with a criminal-court finding.

Clarkson publicly defended Tymon from blame
The next day, Clarkson asked people to stop blaming the producer. In public remarks reported by BBC News on 26 March 2015, he said: “I wish people would leave Ois alone because none of this was his fault.” His appeal is consistent with distinguishing the reported dispute from responsibility for the attack.
A later apology and settlement were reported
In 2016, contemporary reporting described an apology and settlement involving Tymon, Clarkson and the BBC. The available account establishes that these were reported, but does not support adding further details here.
