His concern was not the franchise’s original series: he felt Negan had lost his humor and charisma, while the character’s back-and-forth with Maggie had become repetitive. Conversations about where the characters could go next helped persuade him to stay involved.
Why Morgan considered leaving Dead City
In a 2026 appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Morgan described feeling that season 2 had become stuck. He said Negan spent too much of it crying and no longer felt like the character Morgan recognized. “Negan especially, from my point of view, all I did was cry, and he’d lost his charisma and everything that made him Negan,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s account.
Morgan wanted Negan’s humor, charisma and intelligence to return. He also felt the central Maggie–Negan dynamic was repeating itself: Maggie wanted to kill him, while Negan tried to talk her out of it and save her son. For Morgan, that relationship needed to move forward rather than circle the same conflict.
What changed his mind
After the final day of filming season 2, Morgan said he called AMC executive Dan McDermott from his trailer and told him, “I can’t do it like this anymore.” The subsequent conversations about the characters’ future, along with the addition of writer Seth Hoffman, helped persuade Morgan to remain involved, according to the podcast coverage.

The account describes frustration with the direction of the character and story—not an announcement that Morgan had quit, or that he was leaving the franchise. It also does not establish the details of any future season or guarantee how Negan’s story will develop.
How this differs from Morgan’s 2016 comments
Morgan has spoken before about not wanting to continue a particular Walking Dead experience, but the context was different. In 2016, he described the filming of the original series’ season 7 premiere as emotionally exhausting because of the repeated intensity of the material and a shoot that had no let-up for ten days. “Emotionally I was completely drained—all of us were, I would imagine,” he said in an Interview Magazine conversation.

Dead City brings Morgan’s Negan and Lauren Cohan’s Maggie together again after the original series. AMC’s 2023 Q&A gives that franchise context; it is not the source of Morgan’s later comments about nearly walking away.

Morgan has also described drawing on the comic when developing his portrayal. In a 2016 interview, he recalled reading the comic after someone suggested he play Negan and using the graphic novel as a reference for the television character. That background helps explain why he has a strong view of what makes Negan recognizable, but his recent complaint was specifically about the character’s portrayal and story in Dead City season 2.
