Jeff Probst said he was “slightly panicked” when Rizo Velovic presented an idol at Tribal Council because he did not know what Rizo was about to hand him. The object turned out to be a fake, and Probst has explained that Survivor’s deliberately simple idols can be difficult to distinguish from player-made imitations.

What happened when Rizo played the idol?

At Tribal Council in Survivor 49, Rizo walked up to Probst and said he was playing an idol for Savannah, then handed over a fake. Probst announced that it was not a hidden immunity idol. Yahoo’s November 27, 2025 report attributes Probst’s explanation to the show’s podcast, On Fire with Jeff Probst.

Why did Probst feel panicked?

Probst said he could not know in advance what Rizo would present or for whom he might play it. He had to inspect the object when Rizo handed it over, while knowing that a real idol and a convincing fake might look alike.

As the report quotes him: “Our idols today are so basic that it is very easy to fake one.” Probst said he needed to know exactly what the real idol looked like and wanted a better look at the item in Rizo’s hand. The uncertainty was about authenticating it in the moment—not about knowing beforehand that Rizo had a fake.
