James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane were reported missing from the televised In Memoriam at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026. That does not mean they were absent from the Academy’s online memorial: its separate 2026 page covers artists and filmmakers lost between the 2025 and 2026 Oscars.
Were Van Der Beek and Dane left out of the entire Oscars memorial?
The reported omission was from the ceremony’s broadcast montage. The Academy’s 2026 online In Memoriam page is a separate resource, with a stated scope covering people lost between the 2025 and 2026 Oscars. TVLine reported that submissions not included in the broadcast were posted online.
The online page and televised tribute are therefore not the same list or format. The Academy describes the web page as a moment to remember “the artists and filmmakers we lost between the 2025 and 2026 Oscars.”
Why were they missing from the televised segment?
TVLine reported that the Academy receives hundreds of requests and cannot fit every submission into the time allotted for the broadcast. That is reported context about the memorial’s constraints, not a specific Academy explanation for Van Der Beek’s or Dane’s absence.

Before the ceremony, Academy CEO Bill Kramer told the Associated Press: “As always, there will be a longer version of the in memoriam available online to recognize people who might not make the broadcast cut.” His statement makes clear that the Academy anticipated a distinction between the on-air segment and online recognition; it does not identify why either actor was omitted from the montage.
What did Shonda Rhimes say about Eric Dane?
Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes defended Dane’s absence at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, El País reported. She said, “He’s not a movie star,” and added, “When the Emmys come, he will be immortalized as he deserves.” Those were Rhimes’s comments, not an Academy statement or an established account of the Academy’s selection criteria.

Why were viewers discussing both actors at a film awards show?
Both were best known as television stars, but they also had film credits. TVLine cited Van Der Beek’s Varsity Blues and Dane’s Burlesque and Bad Boys: Ride or Die; the Guardian also described them as television stars with film work. Their film roles help explain the discussion, but do not establish what determined the Academy’s broadcast selections.
