Austin’s reported explanation for leaving The Fosters was that Jesus’s role was expected to shrink in season three, and Austin did not want that to limit other opportunities. The show’s executive producer separately said Austin chose not to return; the production recast Jesus because it wanted to keep the character in the story. Noah Centineo took over the role.
Why did Jake T. Austin leave The Fosters?
In January 2017, Seventeen reported Austin’s answers to fan questions on Twitter. According to that account, he cited creative differences: Jesus’s part was expected to be reduced in season three, and he did not want the smaller role to hold him back from other opportunities. Seventeen also reported that Austin rejected the idea that he left simply because he no longer wanted to play a teenager.
This was Austin’s explanation as reported in 2017, after the recast had been announced. It was not a formal statement from the show’s producers.
What did the producers say?
In an August 2015 interview with TV Insider, executive producer Joanna Johnson said Austin chose not to return. She described the decision as difficult because Jesus was important to the series, and the producers did not want to write the character out permanently. Johnson also pointed to Jesus’s relationship with his twin sister, Mariana.

The two accounts describe different parts of the change: Austin’s reported motivation concerned the expected size of his role and other opportunities; the production’s account was that he chose not to come back and the show wanted to retain Jesus. The available statements do not establish that he was fired or that a personal feud caused the recast.
How did the show explain Jesus’s absence?
The series used a boarding-school storyline to account for Jesus being away while the role was recast. In June 2015, executive producer Peter Paige told TV Guide that Jesus had survived the car crash and was at boarding school, leaving room for the character to return later with a new actor.
