The public rift between J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint centers on transgender rights and sex and gender. It became visible in 2020, when the actors publicly supported transgender people after Rowling’s comments and essay. Later remarks show that the disagreement has not erased every expression of affection: Watson spoke in 2025 about treasuring her history with Rowling, while Rowling responded critically to Watson’s stance. The public record does not establish the present state of all their private relationships.
What caused the public rift?
The immediate divide was over transgender rights and sex and gender. In 2020, after Rowling’s comments and essay on the subject, Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint publicly voiced support for transgender people. Radcliffe’s statement through The Trevor Project said: “Transgender women are women.” He added that statements to the contrary erased transgender people’s identity and dignity.

The actors’ statements did not all take the same form, and the public evidence does not justify treating their current relationships with Rowling as identical. The Guardian reports that Watson and Grint also expressed support for transgender people. Radcliffe’s position was that his connection to Rowling’s work did not oblige him to share her views.
How the disagreement developed
2020: The actors respond
Radcliffe issued his statement through The Trevor Project, while Watson and Grint also publicly supported transgender people, according to The Guardian’s account. The disagreement became a public break in viewpoints, rather than proof of what each person privately said or did.

2021: The film trio reunites
Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint later reunited for the first film’s 20th-anniversary special. The official Wizarding World retrospective describes them reflecting together on their shared experience making the films. Rowling was absent from the reunion, as reported by The Guardian. Their shared film history helps explain why the dispute resonates with fans, but does not reveal the state of their private relationships today.
2024: Radcliffe describes the distance
In an interview reported by The Atlantic, Radcliffe said he had had no direct contact with Rowling since the controversy began. He called the rupture “really sad,” while describing the empathy he sees in the books and world she created. His account is specific to his own contact with her; it should not be extended to Watson or Grint.

March 2025: Rowling’s unnamed social media reply
Asked on social media which actor ruins a movie, Rowling replied: “Three guesses. Sorry, but that was irresistible,” with laughing emojis. She did not name the actors. The Guardian said the post appeared to refer to Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint, so that identification remains an interpretation rather than an explicit statement by Rowling.
September 2025: Watson speaks about Rowling
On Jay Shetty’s podcast, Watson said she continued to treasure her personal history with Rowling and was upset that a conversation between them had not been possible. She expressed a hope that people could keep loving one another despite disagreement: “I think it’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

Days later, Rowling responded critically to Watson’s public stance and comments. Rowling also said Watson and her co-stars had a right to hold their beliefs, describing those beliefs as legally protected. Her response illustrates that Watson’s conciliatory remarks about their personal history did not settle the public dispute.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can—and can’t—be concluded about their relationships?
- Radcliffe: He said in 2024 that he had had no direct contact with Rowling since the controversy began, and described the rupture as sad.
- Watson: In 2025, she spoke warmly about her personal history with Rowling and wished for the possibility of conversation, while maintaining her own views.
- Grint: The cited accounts establish his public support for transgender people, but do not provide an equally detailed recent account of his relationship with Rowling.
These distinctions matter. A public disagreement, a critical social media post, or an absent participant at a reunion cannot by itself establish the full state of a private relationship.
