Major finale spoilers for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Noelle Stevenson says she always planned for the final season to bring Adora and Catra toward reconciliation, but she did not assume that reconciliation had to make them a couple. Their romantic ending became the right conclusion as the story developed—and, Stevenson told io9, she spent several seasons building the groundwork because she feared the relationship could be rejected or cut.
What happens between Adora and Catra in the finale?
In the final episode, “Heart Part 2,” Adora and Catra confirm their romantic feelings. Beth Elderkin’s May 18, 2020 interview with Stevenson describes that moment as the culmination of five seasons of change, with the final season focused on healing old wounds. Adora has to accept her own strength; Catra has to reckon with her mistakes and try to atone for them.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power follows Adora after she leaves the Horde and discovers a magic sword that transforms her into She-Ra, according to Netflix Media Center. Stevenson is credited there as the series’ author and executive producer.
Was Adora and Catra’s relationship planned?
Stevenson says the final season was always meant to be about Adora and Catra reconciling. A romantic relationship, however, was not guaranteed by that plan. Stevenson personally imagined them together, but did not want to impose a romance if it did not feel true to the characters. As the story took shape, she came to see them ending up together as the fitting conclusion.

That distinction matters: in Stevenson’s account, the destination was not fixed simply because she wanted it. The story had to make the relationship feel earned by the characters’ choices and growth.
Why was bringing them together difficult?
Stevenson describes worrying that if she revealed her intended ending too soon, she would be told she could not do it. Rather than announce the romance at the outset, she built story threads across several seasons until the relationship was central to the plot and difficult to remove without changing the story.

After that groundwork was in place and the crew had been informed, Stevenson says she told executives she planned to end the series with Adora and Catra confirming their feelings. She describes the vulnerability of proposing a female love interest and romantic ending for the iconic She-Ra character, particularly as a gay creator working on a children’s animated series. That is Stevenson’s account of her concern; the interview does not establish specific executive decisions beyond what she recounts.
Was Catradora more than a ship?
Yes, in Stevenson’s view. She objected to treating queer relationships as fan “shipping” without acknowledging their narrative purpose. Fans’ enthusiasm mattered to her, but she argued that a queer romance can be central to a story just as romance often is for straight characters.

How Stevenson frames queer storytelling
Stevenson said she hoped future stories would keep expanding what queer audiences could ask for and imagine seeing represented. Elderkin’s interview mentions The Legend of Korra and Steven Universe as part of that conversation, but it does not establish a definitive ranking or historical “first” for queer animation. The more useful comparison is about storytelling: whether a relationship is explicit on screen, how central it is to the plot, and how it shapes the characters’ arcs.
