The story is not about a world discovering superhumans for the first time; it is about how a society already accustomed to them responds when an exceptionally powerful hero acts on his own.
What the 300-year timeline means
At the start of the film, superheroes or metahumans have been known on Earth for 300 years, while Superman has been operating for three. DC.com describes this as a world where humanity has evolved alongside superheroes. The 300 years are a fictional timeline detail, not a real-world statistic.
James Gunn described the setting as “an alternate reality where superheroes have existed for 300 years,” with the story picking up three years after Superman enters the scene. That makes him a new presence in a world with a much longer history of extraordinary people—not the first.
The wording matters: “known” does not necessarily tell us when metahumans first existed. The film’s setup establishes how long they have been part of humanity’s awareness, but does not establish that this is also when they originated.

Why that history changes Superman’s story
Because people in this world have centuries of experience with superheroes, Superman’s actions are judged against an existing social and political landscape. The key question is not simply whether powerful beings exist, but what authority they should have and who holds them accountable.
DC.com points to that tension through Superman’s intervention in an international conflict without government authorization. Lois questions the consequences and accountability of his choice, while public reaction shifts as events unfold. The 300-year history gives that dispute a broader context: Superman is entering a world that already has reasons to debate how independent heroes should act.

A world with heroes, but not yet the Justice League
The film does not present a fully formed Justice League. DC.com describes the Justice Gang as an early iteration, and notes that at least ten superheroes and villains operate openly during the story. The result is a setting where extraordinary figures are visible, but their place in institutions and public life is still contested.
That distinction leaves room for later stories to explore how society normalizes metahumans, what limits or responsibilities it expects of them, and how those expectations change when a particularly powerful new figure arrives.

What the film does not explain
The 300-year figure is a premise, not a complete history. The film and the cited coverage do not identify the first metahuman, specify the event that began the timeline, or provide a comprehensive account of how metahumans shaped earlier human history. Nor do they establish that every metahuman shares one origin or biology; the term is used broadly for people with extraordinary abilities from different sources.
Connecting the timeline to a particular older DC character or comic-book origin may be an interesting theory, but it is not a confirmed explanation in the available film commentary. The useful distinction is between what the story establishes—that metahumans have been known for centuries—and what it leaves open: when they first existed, how they became known, and what their origins are.

Why the detail matters beyond a date
The timeline changes the baseline of the DCU. Superman’s arrival is significant not because humanity has never seen a metahuman, but because his power and independent choices challenge a society that has had generations to form expectations about extraordinary people. The film sets up questions about trust, political intervention, and accountability without supplying a definitive three-century answer. That combination makes the 300 years meaningful world-building—and an unresolved history for future stories to explore.
DC.com contributor Tim Beedle summarizes the setup: “We learn at the very beginning that superheroes have existed on Earth for 300 years and that Superman has been operating for three.” This is Beedle’s description of the film, not dialogue spoken by a character. Read the DC.com commentary.
