Meg Ryan’s Carole Bradshaw is not part of the present-day story in Top Gun: Maverick. Director Joseph Kosinski said the filmmakers wanted to tell a new chapter of Maverick’s life rather than keep looking back at every storyline. Carole remains connected to the film through her relationship to Rooster and brief references and flashback imagery.
Why Carole Bradshaw does not appear in the present-day story
Kosinski explained that the filmmakers were not developing stories for Carole or Charlie, Maverick’s former love interest from the first film. “Those weren’t stories that we were throwing around,” he told Entertainment Tonight in 2022. He also said, “I didn’t want every storyline to always be looking backwards. It was important to introduce some new characters.”
That was a creative choice about the sequel’s focus—not a publicly stated explanation about Meg Ryan’s availability, decision, or casting. The cited comments do not establish that Ryan declined to return or was rejected.
How Carole still matters to the film
Carole is Goose’s wife and Rooster’s mother. Rooster, played by Miles Teller, is the son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, Maverick’s late friend. The sequel’s emotional story centers in part on Maverick reconnecting with Rooster, so Carole’s family connection remains part of the story even though she is not a present-day character. The film references her and includes flashback imagery, as Entertainment Tonight’s report notes.

Why Penny Benjamin is Maverick’s relationship focus
Rather than revisit every relationship from the original, the sequel gives Maverick’s romantic storyline to Penny Benjamin, played by Jennifer Connelly. Penny had been mentioned in the first film; Paramount’s press materials describe her as having an on-and-off history with Maverick and identify the film as a new story set in the present day. The choice fits Kosinski’s stated aim of moving Maverick’s story forward while bringing in characters who were new to the screen.

Carole’s absence from the present-day cast does not, on its own, explain what happened to her after the first film. The cited comments and press materials establish her connection to Goose and Rooster and her continuing presence through references and flashbacks, but they do not confirm that Carole died. The clearest answer is therefore about the filmmakers’ narrative choice: they centered the sequel on Maverick’s new chapter, with Rooster carrying forward the connection to Goose and Penny serving as Maverick’s relationship focus.
