In the original King Kong, the people of Skull Island call the giant ape Kong. Why that name was chosen in real life is uncertain: accounts offer competing explanations, and none establishes a definitive origin.
Why is the creature called Kong in the story?
In the 1933 film, Kong is the name associated with the inhabitants of Skull Island. “King” appears in the full film title, King Kong; it is not a confirmed translation of the name Kong.
“Monkey” is common shorthand in the question, but “giant ape” is the more accurate description of the creature.
Where did the name come from?
The real-world origin is unsettled. The American Film Institute’s account of the film’s production history records several competing stories rather than a single verified explanation.

Fay Wray’s recollection of Cooper
In her autobiography, actor Fay Wray recalled director Merian C. Cooper saying, “I think I’ll call him Kong,” followed after a pause by “King Kong.” This is Wray’s reported memory; it does not establish exactly when or why the final title was chosen.
“King of Komodo” and other proposed explanations
Explorer W. Douglas Burden thought Cooper might have been influenced by his phrase “King of Komodo,” referring to the giant lizards he collected. Other accounts claimed that Kong was a word for gorilla in a little-known East Indian language. The AFI also records explanations tied to title marketing—concern that “Kong” alone might suggest a Chinese general—and a possible effort by RKO to distinguish the film from MGM’s 1932 movie Kongo.

Ray Morton’s assessment
In a 2005 interview with CBS News, Kong historian and author Ray Morton said Cooper told different stories about the name, including that it came from a tribe in the Congo, and concluded: “The truth is, he made it up.” That is Morton’s assessment—not a surviving statement from Cooper that settles the question.

Does Kong have a confirmed literal meaning?
No reliable evidence in these accounts confirms that “Kong” means “king,” “gorilla” or “ape” in a real language. The safest conclusion is that Kong is a coined fictional name whose exact inspiration remains uncertain; “King” gives the film title a grand, royal sound, but the available evidence does not settle who added it or why.
Later franchise material asks how Kong became a king, but that belongs to a subsequent continuity and does not resolve the original film’s naming history.
