In the story, that energy turns his blue fur gold, lifts his quills upward, and gives him flight, greater strength and near invulnerability for as long as he can sustain it. The colour is a visual signature of the in-game transformation. Why the designers chose yellow specifically is a different question, and the sources available do not answer it directly.
What the Chaos Emeralds do in the story
Within the Sonic series’ fiction, Sonic becomes Super Sonic when he gathers all seven Chaos Emeralds, a set that the Sonic Wiki on Fandom lists as the number required. The emeralds’ power reshapes his appearance: his fur becomes golden yellow and his quills point upward. Super Sonic first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), according to a 2021 retrospective by Source Gaming.
What Super Sonic can do
The transformation is more than a costume change. It carries four traits that the series presents as its core:
- Greater power: Super Sonic is stronger than his base form.
- Flight: He can fly, which changes how he moves through a stage.
- Near invulnerability: Hazards that would normally cost him his rings or his life have little effect on him.
- Temporary duration: The form burns through a large amount of energy, so it cannot be held indefinitely.
The temporary limit is the reason the form works as a reward and a climax rather than a permanent upgrade. Each appearance is framed as a state the character reaches and then has to give up.

The Dragon Ball connection
The most common explanation for the yellow look is that it resembles Dragon Ball’s Super Saiyan. The parallels are easy to see:
| Trait | Super Sonic | Super Saiyan (Dragon Ball) |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Golden yellow fur | Golden yellow hair and aura |
| Hair or quills | Upswept quills | Upswept, spiked hair |
| Power | Boosted abilities | Boosted abilities |
| Durability | Near invulnerability | Greatly increased durability |
Source Gaming’s retrospective describes the Dragon Ball influence as obvious. Its support rests on the visual and power parallels above, not on a statement from the creators. Yuji Naka, who programmed Sonic and co-created the character, is publicly known as a fan of Dragon Ball. That fandom makes the parallel plausible, but a fan’s taste is not evidence of a deliberate design decision.

What is confirmed and what is inference
The available material separates into three levels of reliability:
- Confirmed by game lore: The seven-emerald trigger, the yellow fur, the upswept quills, the flight, the invulnerability and the temporary duration all appear in the Sonic fiction itself.
- Retrospective interpretation: Source Gaming’s view that the Dragon Ball influence is obvious is a critic’s reading of the design.
- Unverified claims: Some fan forum threads say that Sega developers have confirmed Super Sonic as a Dragon Ball homage, and others dispute that. One thread states that Super Sonic, Silver and the Blue Sphere mini-game are the only Sonic elements directly confirmed as Dragon Ball-inspired. Those threads are not sourced to an interview or statement from Sega, so they should not be treated as established.
Source Gaming also reports, citing Naka, that Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama never contacted the Sonic team about the resemblance. That is a secondhand account of a statement, not a published Sega or Toriyama document.

What is not known
No verbatim quote from Naka, character designer Naoto Ohshima or Sega explaining why Super Sonic is yellow has been located in the sources reviewed. Several questions remain unanswered in the published record: who drew the Super Sonic sprite and palette, and whether yellow was picked for a visual reason, such as contrast against stage backgrounds or the limits of the hardware palette, rather than as a Dragon Ball reference. Until a developer addresses those questions on the record, the honest answer is that the Chaos Emeralds explain the colour in the story, and the Dragon Ball resemblance is a widely drawn parallel that the creators have not been shown to have stated as their reason.
A fair way to put it is that Super Sonic’s yellow is widely seen as a nod to Dragon Ball’s Super Saiyan. Naka’s enthusiasm for the series is well known, but the team has not, in the sources found, said that the colour was chosen for that reason.
