OBS Studio can crash for several different reasons, and the symptom alone rarely identifies which one. Start by recording when the crash happens, then use OBS safe mode to check for extension problems, isolate conflicting software, and assess system compatibility and GPU workload. If those controlled checks do not resolve it, the crash log and your exact OBS and operating-system versions are needed for a more specific diagnosis.
Before troubleshooting, record what happens
Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a test affected the problem. Note:
- Your operating system and version, and your OBS Studio version.
- Whether OBS closes on launch, freezes, or crashes only while streaming, recording, gaming, or opening a particular scene.
- Recent changes, such as installing a plugin, script, overlay, driver, or OBS update.
- The relevant crash log. Preserve it rather than relying only on a description of the symptom.
Without this information or a crash log, it is not possible to assign a particular cause to an individual crash.
Check whether an OBS extension is involved
OBS safe mode starts OBS with third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets disabled. It is a useful, reversible isolation test: if the behavior changes, an extension may be involved, but that result does not identify which one. See the OBS Project’s Launch Parameters.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start OBS in safe mode using the documented
--safe-modelaunch parameter or the safe-mode option where available. - Try the same action that previously caused the crash.
- If the problem changes, review recently added or updated extensions. Disable or update them, then reintroduce them individually and repeat the test.
Isolate software that can conflict with OBS
Overlays, other capture or recording applications, some security products, and certain drivers or applications can conflict with OBS and cause crashes or other unusual behavior. OBS lists examples including MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, Discord overlays, and Wacom drivers in its Known Application Conflicts guidance.
- Temporarily close likely overlays and on-screen displays.
- Close other game-capture, recording, or streaming applications.
- Test again before moving to another category. Changing one category at a time makes the result easier to interpret.
- If security software appears to be involved, check its OBS access or allow-list settings. Avoid leaving broad security protections disabled.
Check GPU workload and scene complexity
OBS uses GPU resources for rendering and compositing. Resource pressure is worth checking when instability occurs during gaming or another demanding workload, but GPU pressure is not a universal explanation for crashes. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting recommends freeing GPU capacity and simplifying demanding workloads.

- Close other GPU-heavy applications and, when gaming, limit the game’s frame rate to leave capacity for OBS.
- Reduce expensive sources, browser sources, and filters; simplify the scene that is active when the crash occurs.
- On Windows, OBS documents running as administrator as a performance troubleshooting step for GPU overload. Treat it as a targeted test for that situation, not a general-purpose crash fix.
Verify system compatibility and laptop GPU selection
Compare your exact operating system and graphics hardware with the OBS Project’s System Requirements. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record at a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity; compatibility and available performance headroom are different questions.
On a laptop with more than one GPU, check which GPU OBS and the capture method are using. OBS’s Laptop Troubleshooting guidance covers dual-GPU configurations and recommends the default high-power GPU. Check the instructions against your particular machine rather than treating GPU selection as the cause of every crash.

When the crash continues
If safe mode, conflict isolation, and workload checks do not resolve the issue, use the crash log alongside your OBS version, operating system, and the action that triggers the failure. The general troubleshooting checks above can narrow the possibilities; they cannot establish the root cause of an unknown crash without those specifics.
