Netflix failures usually come from one of five places: a Netflix service interruption, your internet connection, the device or app, VPN/proxy or DNS routing, or an account, plan, title, or compatibility restriction. Diagnose the scope first: check Netflix’s live status page, try another device on the same network, test another service, then restart the app, device, and network in that order. This avoids unnecessary factory resets, VPN purchases, and faster-internet upgrades.
First, check whether Netflix is down
Open Netflix’s official status page: help.netflix.com/en/is-netflix-down. Outage information changes, so check it when the problem occurs rather than relying on an old report.
A confirmed Netflix interruption normally affects multiple devices or networks. However, a clear status page does not rule out a regional ISP outage, a device-specific failure, an account or payment problem, a single-title issue, or DNS/VPN routing trouble.
| What you observe | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| Netflix fails on several devices and different networks | Possible Netflix-wide or regional service issue |
| Netflix fails only on one device | App, firmware, device network settings, or hardware |
| Netflix fails on every device in the home | Router, ISP, DNS, account, or local outage |
| Other websites and streaming services also fail | General internet or Wi-Fi problem |
| Only one show or film fails | Title, profile, download, region, or playback-specific issue |
The 10-minute Netflix fix
Work through these steps in order and test Netflix after each major change.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Try another title. This separates a title-specific problem from a service-wide failure.
- Try another device on the same network. Then, if possible, try the affected device on mobile data or another Wi-Fi network.
- Check the official status page at Netflix’s outage page.
- Close Netflix completely and reopen it.
- Restart the device fully. Do not merely put a TV, console, phone, or streaming stick into sleep mode.
- Restart the modem and router. Turn off the device, unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait about one minute for the network to return, and then turn the device on.
- Sign out and sign back in. This refreshes a stale account session.
- Install available updates for Netflix, the operating system, browser, TV firmware, or streaming player.
- Disable VPNs, proxies, Smart DNS, and custom DNS temporarily. Antivirus software and routers can have VPN features enabled even when a separate VPN app is not open.
- Search the exact full error code in the Netflix Help Center.
Netflix documents platform-specific restart timings: many streaming devices should remain powered off for 15 seconds; some TVs require a one-minute power-button cycle or three minutes unplugged; computers should be shut down for at least 10 seconds. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming every device uses the same sequence.
Diagnose Netflix by the symptom
The app will not open, freezes, or stays on loading
- Force-close Netflix and reopen it.
- Restart the device completely.
- Sign out and back in.
- Update Netflix and the device firmware or operating system.
- Reinstall Netflix only after the preceding steps fail. Confirm that you know the account email and password first; reinstalling can remove downloads and local settings.
- Test the account on another device. If it works there, the problem is localized to the original app or device.
Controls differ among Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, consoles, phones, and set-top boxes. Do not apply an Android TV menu path to another platform. On some televisions, Netflix’s support shortcut is Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. If it appears, options may include Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate; availability is not universal. See Netflix’s device guidance at help.netflix.com/en/node/100242.
Buffering, poor quality, or repeated stops
Buffering can result from weak Wi-Fi, congestion, an ISP fault, VPN overhead, an overloaded device, or a Netflix/title problem. Run Fast.com on the affected connection; Netflix recommends it because the test connects directly to Netflix. Select Show more info to compare the detected client country with your actual location.

- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Try another streaming service and website.
- Move the device closer to the router and place the router in an open, elevated location rather than on the floor or inside a cabinet.
- Use Ethernet temporarily, if practical, to separate Wi-Fi interference from an internet-service problem.
- Pause downloads, game updates, cloud backups, and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Restart the modem and router, then test again at a less congested time or on another network.
Do not rely on an old universal “minimum Netflix speed” number. Current quality recommendations vary by service guidance, plan, device, and region; consult Netflix’s current connection guidance instead.

Black screen with sound
- Stop playback and reopen the title.
- Restart Netflix and then restart the TV or streaming device.
- Reseat the HDMI cable, try another cable, and try another HDMI port.
- Disconnect unusual display adapters, capture devices, or splitters.
- Try another title and another device.
Black screen with no sound
- Check the TV input, volume, and mute state.
- Test another app to determine whether the display or audio system works.
- Restart the device and test another title.
- Check HDMI and display settings and install firmware updates.
Netflix treats black-screen and playback symptoms as separate troubleshooting categories; neither automatically proves that Netflix itself is down. See the troubleshooting hub.
“Cannot play title” or only one show fails
- Play a different title.
- Try the problem title on another device.
- Try another profile.
- Check whether the issue involves a download, region, maturity setting, or title availability.
- Restart Netflix and the device, then test the connection with Fast.com.
- Search the exact wording or code in Netflix Help.
On iPhone and iPad, “Cannot play title. Please try again later” generally indicates a network connection problem, but testing other titles first prevents you from treating a single-title fault as a complete outage. Netflix’s instructions are at help.netflix.com/en/node/22796.

Netflix will not let you sign in
- Verify the email address and password by signing in at Netflix.com in a browser.
- Check for a payment, membership, or account-status message.
- Determine whether sign-in fails everywhere or only in one TV or app.
- Sign out of unused or malfunctioning devices if the account has reached a device or session limit.
If the browser account page shows billing or membership trouble, resetting the router will not resolve it. Search the exact message in Netflix’s troubleshooting hub.
VPN, proxy, location, or plan error
Turn off VPN and proxy services, including VPN features bundled with antivirus software or configured on the router. Temporarily restore default DNS settings and retry. On Fast.com, choose Show more info; if the reported country differs from your location, traffic may be routed through a VPN or proxy. Netflix documents this check at help.netflix.com/en/node/2374.

The Netflix website is broken in a browser
- Type
www.netflix.comdirectly instead of using an old bookmark. - Sign out and sign back in.
- Disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, download helpers, and VPN extensions.
- Open a private/incognito window and try an updated, supported browser.
- Check the computer’s date, time, and time zone and set them automatically.
- Reset Netflix cookies at netflix.com/clearcookies: select Sign In, sign in again, and retry.
- Confirm that the account plan permits browser playback.
A white page containing text but no images can involve browser settings, connection problems, incorrect date/time, or extensions. Netflix lists these possibilities at help.netflix.com/en/node/44726.
Compare devices and networks before changing settings
| Test result | What to prioritize |
|---|---|
| Works in a browser but not the app | App data, app update, device compatibility, or app-specific network settings |
| Works on the TV but not the browser | Browser extensions, cookies, plan restriction, browser compatibility, or computer clock |
| Works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data | Cellular carrier restriction, device setting, VPN, or mobile-network coverage |
| Works on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi | Router, ISP, DNS, firewall, VPN, or home-network restriction |
| Other streaming apps also fail | Device, Wi-Fi, modem, router, or ISP problem rather than Netflix alone |
When contacting an ISP, report whether one or several devices are affected and whether they use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. That information helps separate a Netflix account issue from network reachability.

Wi-Fi, router, DNS, and ISP checks
- Open another website or app and run the device’s built-in network test.
- Confirm that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network.
- If modem and router are separate, restart each unit; unplug both for 30 seconds, reconnect, and wait about one minute.
- Move the router and device closer together; keep the router out of cabinets and off the floor.
- Test Ethernet where possible.
- Temporarily remove custom DNS, proxy, and VPN settings.
- Ask the ISP about an outage, DNS failure, or incorrect network configuration.
Netflix lists secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com among addresses that may need to be reachable. These are useful for an ISP or network administrator; most readers should not edit firewall rules or DNS records without guidance. See Netflix’s network troubleshooting instructions.
Public, hotel, school, workplace, mobile-hotspot, and satellite networks add complications. A hotel or café may require a browser captive-portal sign-in; schools and workplaces may block video; cellular, hotspot, or satellite links may be too slow or unstable. Ask the network operator whether video services are restricted. Netflix discusses these cases at help.netflix.com/en/node/13813.
Common Netflix error-code families
Error prefixes provide clues, not complete diagnoses. Search the exact full code because codes in the same family can have different causes.
- NW-*: commonly relates to network connection or reachability.
- UI-800-3: commonly involves connection settings or stale device/app state; follow the exact instructions at Netflix’s UI-800-3 page.
- tvq-*: can involve device, title, or network-specific playback conditions.
- D7111-*: often points to browser, plan, or playback-environment restrictions; see Netflix’s browser guidance.
- NSEZ-403: can indicate an account connection or temporary service problem in particular flows.
- NW-2-5: a network timeout covered at Netflix’s NW-2-5 instructions.
- NW-1-1000: connection, VPN, DNS, or ISP troubleshooting is covered at Netflix’s NW-1-1000 page.
Old or unsupported devices
Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, consoles, and streaming boxes can lose Netflix support because of old software, hardware, certification, or security limitations. Install available manufacturer firmware first. If the built-in app cannot be updated or repaired, contact the manufacturer or use a supported external streaming player.

Quick Recap
When to contact Netflix, your ISP, or the device maker
| Contact | Do so when | Have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix | The status page indicates an interruption; an account, payment, title, or Netflix-specific error persists across working networks | Exact error text/code, account email, affected title, devices, and test results |
| ISP | Several devices fail on one connection; other services fail; Fast.com is unstable; DNS, modem, router, or regional outage is suspected | Whether devices use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, outage symptoms, Fast.com result, and router restart time |
| Device manufacturer | Firmware, HDMI, factory-reset, hardware, or unsupported-model trouble remains after Netflix works elsewhere | Exact model, operating-system/firmware version, HDMI setup, and steps already attempted |
Only buy equipment after proving it is the problem
- Replacement streaming device: justified when the TV app is unsupported, cannot receive firmware updates, or the TV software is defective. Potential vendors include Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Google TV. Check the television’s HDMI and display capabilities and current device support before buying.
- Router or mesh system: consider one only after Ethernet or moving the existing router demonstrates a coverage or hardware problem. Vendor examples include Eero, TP-Link, Google Nest Wifi, and Netgear.
- Internet-plan change: consider it only after confirming sustained capacity or congestion with Fast.com and other-device tests. A faster plan cannot repair an app, account, unsupported TV, or Netflix outage.
- Technical support: use Netflix or the device manufacturer before paying a third-party service that promises to bypass restrictions or guarantee outage repairs.
