First identify which problem you have: are you broadcasting and the outgoing livestream looks blurry or unstable, or are you watching a video that buffers or stays at low resolution? The fixes differ. Creators should check YouTube’s stream health, their encoder and video sources, then upload capacity. Viewers should check playback quality, their connection and device.
If you’re broadcasting: diagnose the outgoing stream
1. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream and inspect its health indicator and messages. YouTube flags problems such as an incorrect bitrate, unsupported codec or stream format, mismatched resolution, excessive frame rate, and incorrect keyframe frequency. Fix the specific reported issue first instead of changing several settings at once. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
2. Check what the encoder is actually sending
Compare the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table. For H.264, YouTube’s published guidance lists:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them. AV1 and H.265 have different figures; do not apply H.264 values to those codecs. YouTube’s current settings page recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and supported settings listed in its table. Because codec support and recommended settings can change, use the live Help page rather than relying on an old preset.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Rule out bad source video, audio or encoder performance
Look at the encoder preview and, if available, a local recording. If either already looks or sounds wrong, check the video and audio sources routed into the encoder, encoder error messages, and CPU load; update the encoder software. YouTube notes: “If your stream looks or sounds bad, there may be a problem with the quality of your audio and the video sources routed to your encoder.” If the local image is clean but the YouTube stream is not, move on to the outbound connection. The troubleshooting steps are in YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
4. Make sure upload capacity has headroom
Your sustained available upload bandwidth must exceed the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube Help says: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” That 20% is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of stability. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your encoder, and connection disruptions can break a stream. Run an upload-speed test under conditions similar to the broadcast, including when other people or devices are using the network. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection; if a test indicates connection trouble, its guidance is to contact your internet provider. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

5. Test under realistic conditions
Before an important broadcast, test with audio and motion similar to what you plan to stream. Monitor stream health and messages during the event. If viewers on different connections report the same quality problem, suspect the outgoing stream or encoder and check its diagnostics; if only one viewer has trouble, investigate that viewer’s connection and device first.
If you’re watching: fix blurry playback or buffering
1. Check the selected playback quality
When available, open the YouTube player’s settings and manually select a resolution rather than leaving it on Auto. If the selected quality is higher than your connection can sustain, lower it and see whether buffering stops. YouTube’s approximate sustained download speeds for playback are:

| 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| 360p | 0.7 Mbps |

2. Test the connection and reduce competing traffic
- Try the video on another connection. If quality improves, the original network is a likely part of the problem.
- Check whether other devices or downloads are using the same connection, and pause unnecessary traffic while watching.
- On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and reduce obstructions or likely interference. If you suspect unstable wireless, comparing it with a wired connection is an optional diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
3. Check the app, browser and device
If changing connections does not help, try YouTube in a supported browser or in the YouTube app, as appropriate for your device. Restart the app or device; on an app that supports it, clear the cache. YouTube’s linked troubleshooting page is for computers, so steps and menus can differ on phones and TVs. See YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting guide.
