A Google Cloud-to-YouTube stream can drop frames when the encoder cannot produce video steadily, the cloud-to-YouTube connection is constrained or inconsistent, or YouTube detects an ingest or configuration problem. The symptom alone does not identify the cause. Start with the timestamped errors in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare those times with encoder logs and cloud-side CPU and network measurements.
Trace the problem through the stream path
A typical stream passes through three distinct stages: video is encoded, the encoded stream is transported out of the cloud environment, and YouTube ingests it. A problem at any stage can look like dropped frames to a viewer. Diagnose each stage against the same incident timestamps before changing settings or resizing a VM.
1. Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream-health indicator and its associated errors. Note when each error appeared. YouTube’s health API can report videoIngestionStarved, meaning YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. That describes the ingest symptom; it does not establish whether the encoder, network path, or another upstream component caused it.
2. Check whether the encoder is producing frames consistently
At the error times, check the encoder’s output rate and logs, application queues, and CPU, GPU, or accelerator utilization. If encoding or transcoding happens on a Compute Engine VM, correlate those records with VM CPU and network counters. A VM upgrade is justified only if measurements show that compute or bandwidth capacity is the limiting factor; there is no universally suitable machine type established for every stream.

3. Measure the actual outbound path
Compare observed outbound throughput, packet loss, latency, and jitter over the incident interval—not just a brief speed-test result. Google Cloud notes that distance and intermediate transit steps can affect latency and jitter. Compute Engine bandwidth is accounted for per instance, and a full receive queue can result in packet drops. These are possibilities to verify for the particular VM and route, not proof that a Google Cloud setting caused the problem.
Check bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframes
Match the encoder settings to the exact YouTube error and the codec-specific guidance in YouTube’s current stream settings table. Errors can concern video or audio format, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe frequency. Frame rate and keyframe timing are linked; YouTube recommends keyframes every two seconds for the relevant settings. Avoid copying a preset designed for a different codec or frame rate.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
For H.264, YouTube’s table recommends 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 50 Mbps for 2160p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed outcomes or Google Cloud VM requirements. Check the current table for the relevant codec and frame rate before configuring the stream.
Make sure sustained bandwidth has headroom
YouTube’s guidance is that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. It recommends leaving 20% headroom and accounting for other network use, including a backup stream if one is running. YouTube’s wording is direct: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” A short speed test does not establish that the route can sustain the required throughput during the full stream; compare real throughput and packet loss at the times frames are lost.

Keep direct YouTube ingest separate from Live Stream API input
Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation recommends SRT over RTMP when the encoder supports it, citing packet-drop recovery and forward error correction. That advice is for the API’s input endpoint. It does not mean a direct OBS- or encoder-to-YouTube workflow can switch to SRT, and SRT will not resolve an overloaded VM by itself.
The API’s documented H.264 source-input recommendations include 15 Mbps for 720p at 50/60 fps and 20 Mbps for 1080p at 50/60 fps. These figures apply to that API input workflow, not YouTube’s separate encoder recommendations. Do not treat the two sets of figures as interchangeable.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Record the symptom: In Live Control Room, note the health errors and their timestamps.
- Align the evidence: Compare those timestamps with encoder output and application logs, VM CPU/GPU utilization, and cloud network counters.
- Verify the configuration: Match codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to the error and YouTube’s current table.
- Test capacity under real load: Compare sustained outbound throughput and packet loss with the combined stream bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Investigate route behavior: Check latency and jitter for the relevant route; consider VM bandwidth accounting and receive-queue drops where the metrics indicate them.
- Change one evidenced constraint at a time: Adjust encoder load, stream settings, capacity, or protocol only when the measurements point to that component, then verify whether the same health errors recur.
