A low-resolution picture does not necessarily mean your encoder is sending a low-resolution feed. YouTube transcodes live video into formats for different devices and network conditions, so check the encoder’s output and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages before changing equipment. The cause of a specific stream depends on its settings, upload connection and viewer playback conditions.
Start by checking the encoder’s outgoing video
In the encoder that sends the stream to YouTube, verify the output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. A setting that is lower than intended can make the incoming feed low-resolution regardless of what viewers select. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution and frame rate; its current H.264 recommendations are:
| Output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source, encoder or connection can sustain the output. The guidance was current when accessed in 2026 and may change. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the latest recommendations and guidance for other codecs.
Check the stream key’s resolution setting
YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need a manual setting, YouTube says to create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution. Confirm the encoder is using the intended key and that its selected resolution matches the output you expect. A manual selection that does not match the intended configuration can undermine your target settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for the applicable options.

Read stream health while the feed is live
Open YouTube Live Control Room and look at stream health and any messages while the encoder is sending video. A representative test before relying on a continuous stream should include audio and movement like the actual program. A static test image or a short test under different conditions may not reveal an issue that occurs during normal playback.
Measure upload capacity at the encoder
The relevant connection is the one the encoder uses to upload the stream—not a viewer’s download speed or a speed test from an unrelated location. YouTube says the total outgoing bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Account for other traffic on the connection, including any additional primary or backup streams. A shared office network can limit the bandwidth available to the encoder, and disruptions can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Check the sustained outbound capacity where the encoder is connected, preferably while normal network use is taking place.
- Compare the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate with that available capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% margin.
- Look for instability or competing traffic rather than relying on a single speed-test result.
Compare playback on other devices and connections
YouTube transcodes a live feed into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That means one viewer’s low-resolution playback alone does not establish that the incoming feed is low-resolution. Compare the stream on more than one device and connection, and check what resolution is available and selected in playback. This comparison is a troubleshooting clue, not proof that a particular device or viewer connection is responsible. YouTube also notes that lower-latency settings can mean more buffering; see its stream settings guidance.
Use the evidence to choose a fix
- Encoder output is lower than intended: Correct the output resolution, frame rate, codec or bitrate in the encoder, then test again.
- Settings look right, but YouTube reports stream-health problems: Follow the displayed messages and check the actual feed and connection during a representative test.
- Upload capacity is tight or unstable: Reduce competing network traffic or address the connection problem before raising the stream bitrate. If the encoder relies on Wi-Fi or an inadequate physical link, a wired connection may be worth checking; it cannot fix an incorrectly configured output.
- The feed and stream health appear sound, but playback differs by viewer: Compare other devices and connections before concluding that the encoder is at fault.
YouTube lists verified live encoder offerings and supports encoder-based streaming. Consider different hardware only if your existing equipment cannot provide the settings or operational reliability you need. Identify whether the limitation is configuration, encoder capability, network capacity or playback first.
