The immediate reported spark was Netflix’s 2024 series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which used Milli Vanilli songs in scenes set in 1989. A streaming increase followed, but the renewed attention has outlasted the soundtrack moment: a documentary, a German biopic, Fab Morvan’s memoir and audiobook Grammy nomination, and his return to live performance have brought the story back into view.
Why is Milli Vanilli trending again?
Rolling Stone reported on October 13, 2024, citing Billboard, that Milli Vanilli’s catalog streams increased 114% after Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story premiered. The series placed the group’s songs in scenes tied to the 1989 Menendez case, giving viewers a reason to search for the music and the scandal behind it.

The same report said streams of “Blame It on the Rain” rose 68%, “Girl You Know It’s True” rose 32.5%, and “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” rose 258% after the premiere. These are historical figures attributed to Billboard by Rolling Stone, not a measure of current listening or a claim that the increase has continued. Rolling Stone’s report
What happened to Milli Vanilli?
Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan became the public faces of Milli Vanilli, but other singers recorded the vocals on the hit records. After the deception became public in 1990, the duo’s Best New Artist Grammy was rescinded.

What Pilatus and Morvan knew beforehand remains disputed. In a 2026 account, The Guardian reported that Morvan says he and Pilatus believed they would sing on the records; producer Frank Farian denied this and said he hired them as performers. Those accounts differ, so the question of prior knowledge should not be treated as settled. The Guardian’s 2026 account
Why has the story lasted beyond the TV soundtrack?
The documentary revisits the people behind the scandal
Luke Korem’s 90-minute documentary Milli Vanilli premiered on Paramount+ on October 24, 2023, according to Paramount Global Content. Korem told Vogue he wanted to get past sensational headlines and explore “the human story” and the layers beneath the familiar account. The film’s approach includes questions of race and power in the music business. Paramount Global Content’s title listing · Vogue’s interview with Korem

The biopic dramatizes the group’s rise and scandal
The German biopic Girl You Know It’s True added another retelling. The Guardian’s 2026 profile describes the film and documentary as part of the renewed reconsideration of the story; it reported the biopic streaming on Prime at the time of publication. Streaming catalogs vary by country and change, so check local availability rather than assuming that listing is current. The Guardian’s profile
Morvan is telling his story in his own words
Morvan’s memoir, You Know It’s True: The Real Story of Milli Vanilli, was co-written with journalist Parisa Rose. The audiobook was nominated for best audiobook, narration and storytelling recording at the 2026 Grammy Awards. That nomination returned Morvan to Grammy coverage decades after the duo’s award was taken back. In the Guardian interview, he said, “I had to free myself and tell my story.” The Guardian on Morvan’s memoir and nomination

What the renewed attention changes—and what it doesn’t
The resurgence is more than nostalgia for the hits: recent coverage asks how race, exploitation, and power shaped the group’s public image and the music business around it. The documentary’s interest in the human story, alongside Morvan’s own account, encourages a fuller look than the scandal’s old punchline. But the competing claims about what the duo knew are still competing claims, not a settled explanation.
The evidence supports a specific conclusion: Monsters prompted a reported streaming spike in 2024, and subsequent films, Morvan’s memoir, award coverage, and live performances extended attention. It does not establish that Milli Vanilli are objectively “hotter than ever” by a current popularity measure.
