Anna Wintour gave up the day-to-day editor-in-chief role at American Vogue in 2025, but she did not leave Vogue or Condé Nast. She kept her jobs as Condé Nast chief content officer and Vogue global editorial director. The stated reason is workload: a new U.S. editorial lead would free her to support Condé Nast’s other global markets. Chloe Malle was appointed American Vogue’s head of editorial content on September 2, 2025, and reports to Wintour.
What changed and what did not
- June 27, 2025: Vogue announced that American Vogue would seek a head of editorial content to lead its daily operations across platforms. The announcement did not name a successor, and Wintour’s company-wide role and global Vogue role stayed in place.
- September 2, 2025: Vogue named Chloe Malle to the post, effective immediately. Malle leads the title’s creative and editorial direction and reports to Wintour.
- Scope, as the Associated Press described it: Malle took over day-to-day editorial and creative operations at the U.S. edition. Wintour remained Condé Nast chief content officer and Vogue global editorial director, and stayed global editorial director of American Vogue and its 27 other editions.
- Length of tenure: Wintour had led American Vogue since 1988, a run of 37 years before the 2025 handoff, according to Vogue and AP reporting.
Stepping back is not leaving
Headlines that say Wintour is “stepping down” or “leaving” describe only part of the picture. The accurate description is that she stepped back from running American Vogue’s daily editorial operations while continuing in senior corporate and global roles. Wintour did not retire, and the reporting does not describe her leaving Condé Nast.

Why the change was made
Three public explanations exist, and each comes from someone with a stake in how the change is described. None of them establishes a hidden personal motive, so the reasons below should be read as stated rather than proven.
Vogue’s stated rationale
Vogue’s June 2025 announcement said Wintour’s role had expanded over the previous four years across Condé Nast’s global titles. That was on top of editing American Vogue and overseeing events such as Vogue World and the Met Gala. The company said: “In effect, the addition of a new editorial lead for Vogue US will allow Wintour greater time and flexibility to support the other global markets that Condé Nast serves.”

Wintour’s own explanation
In statements to Vogue staff in June 2025, Wintour framed the change around creative growth and mentorship. She said: “Anybody in a creative field knows how essential it is never to stop growing in one’s work.” She also said: “Now, I find that my greatest pleasure is helping the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas.”
When she announced Malle’s appointment in September 2025, Wintour described the hire as the step that let her concentrate on the wider business: “When it came to hiring someone to edit American Vogue, letting me turn my attention more intensely to Vogue’s multifaceted growth across its global audiences and publications and events like the Met Gala and Vogue World, I knew I had one chance to get it right.”

Condé Nast’s CEO explanation
Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch described the workload directly. As The Guardian reported, Wintour had been doing three jobs since 2020, and the change would “enable her to make time for everyone who needs her.” This is the CEO’s characterization of the workload, not an independently measured figure.
Who is Chloe Malle?
Malle joined Vogue in 2011 and later worked as a contributing editor. Before the appointment she edited Vogue.com and co-hosted The Run-Through, Vogue’s weekly fashion and culture podcast. In her new role she leads American Vogue’s creative and editorial direction and reports to Wintour.

In a September 2025 interview with David Remnick published in The New Yorker, Wintour said Malle performed strongly through the hiring process, returning with the clearest vision and most original ideas. Wintour cited Malle’s understanding of newsroom immediacy and culture, and her grasp of how fashion relates to music, film, and politics.
