Later cases involving Munawar Faruqui and Kunal Kamra show other kinds of pressure on comedians and venues, but the available reporting does not establish one continuous, centrally coordinated campaign connecting every incident.
What the 2020 backlash involved
Scroll’s 2020 report described comedians being targeted online, including through the recirculation of old posts and threats that pushed performers toward apologies. The headline’s phrase “online armies” is its framing; the available account does not establish the scale or coordination of those attacks as an independently measured fact.

Agrima Joshua and the Shivaji statue joke
In a 2021 feature, The Indian Express reported that Agrima Joshua faced threats after a joke about a proposed Shivaji statue circulated. The threats included threatened legal action and rape threats. Comedian Azeem Banatwalla warned that smaller comedians and venues could become political soft targets. That is Banatwalla’s analysis, rather than an independently established explanation for every attack. The Indian Express’s account of the 2020 backlash describes the episode and its effects.
Why shows were cancelled in Munawar Faruqui’s case
Faruqui’s experience was a separate case, not part of Joshua’s episode. Al Jazeera reported in 2021 that Faruqui said 12 of his shows had been cancelled over two months because of threats to venues and audiences. That number is his account of cancellations affecting his own shows, not an industry-wide tally.

Faruqui was also interrupted and arrested in Indore in January 2021. TIME reported that the Supreme Court granted him bail in February, describing the allegations as vague. These events involved both pressure on performances and legal action; they should not be conflated with online abuse directed at other comedians. Al Jazeera’s report on threats facing comedians details Faruqui’s account. TIME’s report on his arrest and bail covers the legal case.
How the forms of pressure differ
| Case | Pressure reported | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Agrima Joshua, 2020 | Online threats after a joke about a proposed Shivaji statue circulated | The Indian Express reported threats of legal action and rape threats. |
| Munawar Faruqui, 2021 | Threats to venues and audiences; show cancellations; arrest and legal proceedings | Al Jazeera attributed the count of 12 cancellations in two months to Faruqui. TIME reported his arrest and subsequent bail. |
| Kunal Kamra and The Habitat, 2025 | Physical vandalism at a performance venue after a skit | AP reported that Shiv Sena party workers ransacked the Mumbai studio where Kamra had performed. Police investigated the vandalism and a complaint related to the skit. |
What the 2025 venue attack adds—and does not prove
In March 2025, The Associated Press reported that Shiv Sena party workers ransacked the Mumbai studio where Kunal Kamra had performed after a skit about Eknath Shinde. Police investigated both the vandalism and a complaint related to the skit. The Habitat Comedy Club said: “We are shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us.” This was a later instance of disruption aimed at a venue; on its own, it does not prove a single campaign linking the 2020 backlash, Faruqui’s case and the 2025 attack. AP’s report on the vandalism and investigation describes the incident.

What can be concluded about a “concerted attack”
The reports document several kinds of pressure: online threats, cancelled shows attributed to threats against venues and audiences, arrest and legal proceedings, and physical disruption of a venue. They involve different performers, places and dates. The cited reporting does not provide a reliable industry-wide count of attacks or establish that all the incidents were centrally coordinated. The headline’s characterization should therefore be read as a description of the 2020 controversy, not as proof that every later case formed part of one ongoing operation.
