An AOL exclusive characterized the exit as a surprise to most people at the show, but its article could not be checked and the accessible excerpt does not reveal how that claim was sourced.
Why did Hoda Kotb leave the Today show?
Kotb described her departure as a personal choice tied to a new stage of life, not as a firing. After turning 60, she said, she reflected on her career and the time she wanted to give her family. In a memo to her team, quoted by the Associated Press, she wrote: “I saw it all so clearly: my broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie.”
Speaking on air about the decision, Kotb called it “the hardest thing in the world.” The sources reporting her announcement do not establish contract, salary, or other business considerations as reasons for leaving.
Was her departure a surprise to Today staff?
The AOL exclusive’s surfaced headline described Kotb’s exit as “a Complete Surprise to Most People at the Show.” Its short excerpt said she shared the news in a letter to staff. However, the article itself could not be checked, and the excerpt does not identify who supplied the surprise characterization, how many people were consulted, or when staff learned of the decision. The wording should therefore be treated as the exclusive’s framing—not as a verified quotation from a named staff member or proof that everyone at the show was unaware.

When was Kotb’s last day, and who replaced her?
Kotb announced her planned departure in September 2024, months before her final official day on January 10, 2025. NBC named Craig Melvin as her successor in the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. hours, beginning January 13, 2025, according to the Associated Press.
How long had Kotb been at NBC and Today?
Kotb joined NBC News in 1998 as a Dateline correspondent and joined Today in 2007. She began co-anchoring the show’s first two hours with Savannah Guthrie in 2018. Guthrie responded to Kotb’s announcement by telling her, “We love you so much,” as reported by the Associated Press.

Kotb said she intended to remain part of the NBC family. That statement did not specify a continuing job or schedule, so it does not by itself establish what work, if any, she would take on after leaving the anchor role.
