What did Henry Cavill say about the age-gap reaction?
In an ELLE interview published February 18, 2016, the interviewer asked Cavill whether he understood the “knee-jerk reaction” to King’s age. Cavill replied: “It’s a natural reaction. But when I was 19, I was going out with a 32-year-old.”
That answer is the clearest basis for saying he felt the reaction was understandable. He acknowledged that a 32-year-old dating a 19-year-old would prompt an instinctive response from some people, then offered his own earlier experience as context. He did not say that the age gap made the relationship wrong, nor did he claim that everyone objected.
How old were Cavill and Tara King?
ELLE described Cavill as 32 and King as a 19-year-old university student at the time of the interview. Contemporary coverage also gave those ages and described the difference as 13 years, including Entertainment Tonight’s February 16, 2016 report and The Indian Express’s February 19, 2016 archive report, credited to PTI.

What else did Cavill say about King?
When asked what he and King talked about, Cavill answered, “Everything.” He added: “A lot of times it’s not just a number. It’s actually a real and true sign of someone’s maturity. But in this case, she’s fantastic.” Those were Cavill’s descriptions of King and their conversations; they are not independent evidence about her maturity or the relationship’s private dynamics.
What does the reporting establish—and what does it not?
- Established in the interview: Cavill called the reaction to King’s age natural and said he had dated a 32-year-old when he was 19. That earlier relationship is his account in the interview, not independently documented by the cited coverage.
- Not established: The cited reports do not quantify public opinion or prove that everyone reacted negatively. They also do not independently establish how the couple experienced the age difference or assess the relationship’s power dynamics.
The distinction matters: “warranted” is best understood here as Cavill conceding that the age difference would naturally draw attention, not as a conclusion that the sources prove every criticism was correct.

In May 2016, Us Weekly reported that Cavill and King had split, citing multiple sources. Its explanation—that King was “in too deep” while Cavill did not want something too serious—came from an unnamed source. It should not be treated as a direct statement from either Cavill or King.
