What was reported on the casings?
In September 2025 coverage, WIRED reported an inscription reading “Hey Fascist! Catch!” followed by an up arrow, a right arrow and three downward arrows. The sequence appears to match the directional input for the Eagle 500kg bomb in Helldivers 2. WIRED’s reporting connected a separate casing inscription to lyrics from “Bella Ciao.” CNN-syndicated reporting also described the song lyrics and said authorities viewed the inscriptions as potential evidence of political motive, while noting the messages mixed memes and game allusions.

The two game connections are different in kind: one is an interpreted match between arrows and a game input; the other is a song reference, since Far Cry 6 features a version of “Bella Ciao.” Neither connection, by itself, establishes why the shooting happened.
How does the arrow sequence connect to Helldivers 2?
In Helldivers 2, the Eagle 500kg bomb is called in using a directional-button sequence. The arrows reported on the casing appear to reproduce that input. WIRED presented this as an apparent reference, rather than definitive proof of what the person who engraved it intended.

WIRED also reported that the casings carried several messages and quoted Don Caldwell, editor in chief of Know Your Meme, describing the arrow sequence’s meme use as “That’s maybe a cheeky way of expressing it on the casing.” That observation concerns the way the sequence can be used as a meme; it does not establish a motive for the shooting.
Why does Bella Ciao connect the story to Far Cry 6?
“Bella Ciao” is a traditional Italian song with a history that predates its use in games. NPR/KBIA, citing University of Oregon Italian professor Diana Garvin, traces it to Italian folk and labor contexts and its later association with partisan resistance. The song has also been used in entertainment and politics, and a version appears in Far Cry 6.

That history matters because a song’s appearance on a casing cannot be interpreted solely through its use in one game—or assigned one fixed political meaning in every context. The reported lyric inscription establishes a cultural reference; it does not settle the intent behind it.

WIRED cautioned that the reported inscriptions did not express a clearly legible political ideology. The Guardian reported that the suspect described the messages in a text relayed by authorities as “mostly a big meme,” and said the engravings did not offer a cohesive explanation for the killing. The quoted text is reported through authorities, not an independently authenticated direct interview.

As of the cited September 2025 reports, the references were part of news coverage of the investigation, not a definitive account of what motivated the killing. Those reports do not establish the case’s current procedural status or any later official or judicial interpretation of the engravings.
