Heidi Gardner laughed when she turned toward Mikey Day as Butt-Head during the April 13, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Ryan Gosling. She had seen the characters at dress rehearsal, but said Day’s live performance still caught her off guard. Afterward, she worried that breaking character meant she had failed; a laugh from SNL creator Lorne Michaels helped reassure her.
What happened in the sketch?
Gardner played a News Nation moderator in a serious discussion about artificial intelligence, with Kenan Thompson as an AI expert. Gosling and Day appeared as audience members whose Beavis and Butt-Head looks and reactions repeatedly distracted Thompson’s character. When Gardner turned and saw Day as Butt-Head, she burst into laughter and paused to regain her composure as the studio audience cheered.
The contrast drove the joke: a straight-faced discussion kept getting interrupted by the cartoon-like figures in the audience. SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels described the premise to Vanity Fair as “The game of it is that there’s a real, serious thing going on, and here are these two guys.”
Why did Heidi Gardner break?
Gardner had seen the performers’ looks in dress rehearsal, but she said that did not prepare her for the live moment. In comments from her Vulture interview reported by the Los Angeles Times, she said, “I just couldn’t prepare for what I saw. I really tried.” She also recalled, “I’ll never be able to shake looking over my shoulder and seeing what I saw.”

Day added subtle choices during the live version. He told Vanity Fair that he widened his eyes slightly and played off Gardner’s laughter, making it harder for her to recover. The break was not simply a surprise at the costume: it unfolded in the moment as Day continued to perform against her reaction.
How did Gardner feel afterward?
Gardner said she was “a little bit in shock” after the sketch. Then, she told the Los Angeles Times, “Then the anxiety set in and I was like, ‘Oh my God, was that OK?’” She had been coached to stay straight-faced before joining SNL in 2017, and she found it difficult to give herself credit because she felt she “didn’t do the job.”

In a later account, Gardner recalled making eye contact with Michaels after the sketch and seeing him laugh. That reassured her she was not in trouble. A Bravo interview highlight likewise describes her initial fear and the relief she felt at Michaels’s smile. Gardner later reflected, “I love to play characters and kind of hide behind them, but that was letting people know, ‘This is who I am.’ I will never forget that,” according to Vanity Fair.
How did the sketch make it to air?
The idea had been developed over several years by writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, according to Vanity Fair’s June 6, 2024 oral history. Earlier versions were cut: one after revisions for a Jonah Hill episode, and another for an Oscar Isaac episode for technical reasons that included the size of the set. The version with Gosling eventually aired. These details come from participants’ retrospective accounts.

Published view counts are dated snapshots, not current totals. The Associated Press reported more than 13 million YouTube views on May 1, 2024; Vanity Fair reported 16 million views on SNL’s YouTube channel on June 6, 2024. Those figures were reported at different times and should not be treated as simultaneous measurements or as evidence of a broader trend in cast members breaking character.
