Alice Oseman’s story began as a webcomic, grew into print through crowdfunding and traditional publishing, and reached a wider audience after its Netflix adaptation. Its appeal rests on more than that trajectory: it follows queer young love alongside friendship, coming out, identity and mental health.
What Heartstopper is about—and why its story resonates
Oseman’s series follows Nick and Charlie, who meet at a British grammar school, become friends and fall in love. The relationship is the centre of a story about first love and friendship, but the books also address coming out, identity, mental health, personal boundaries and self-advocacy. Scholastic describes the series as handling difficult adolescent subjects with warmth.

That combination helps explain why the books matter to young readers: they place queer romance within the ordinary emotional work of growing up. The series’ publishing success is inseparable from its subject, but sales alone cannot explain what readers find in it.
From webcomic to print series
Oseman began Heartstopper as a webcomic on Tumblr and Tapas. Netflix Tudum dates its online start to August 2016. In 2018, Oseman launched a Kickstarter for a limited print edition; her official history says the campaign met its target in under two hours. Hachette Children’s Group then began wider publication with Volume One in spring 2019, followed by Volume Two in July. Oseman’s official Heartstopper history and Netflix Tudum’s account of the series document the shift from online comic to print and screen.

The route matters because it shows how a creator-led story can find readers online, use crowdfunding to test demand for a physical edition, and then enter wider distribution through a publisher. It is not a formula that guarantees a hit; it is the particular path this series took.

| Evidence | What was reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Scholastic announcement, April 4, 2023 | More than 8 million copies sold in more than 35 countries worldwide; the series had number-one positions on The Sunday Times and The New York Times bestseller lists in 2022. | A publisher-reported milestone as of 2023, not a current lifetime total. Scholastic also said Volume One was the top-selling graphic novel in a combined adult and children’s chart since BookScan records began; that statement applies to that chart and scope, not an unqualified “best-selling graphic novel ever.” |
| University of Manchester summary of research with Princeton University, July 13, 2026 | After the Netflix release in April 2022, sales rose dramatically and sustainably across eleven countries, with more than 76,000 additional weekly copies reported. | This describes the increase following a past release, not a current weekly sales rate. The institutional summary reports findings from the research; it is not the full underlying study. |
| Oseman’s official history, undated figure currently displayed | More than 124 million online views. | The site does not state a measurement period, so this is not directly comparable to a dated sales count. Scholastic reported 115.8 million views in its 2023 announcement. |
Scholastic’s dated announcement is available at its April 2023 release. The University of Manchester’s July 2026 summary reports the adaptation-related findings. Together, the sources support the conclusion that Heartstopper achieved substantial international reach, while their distinct dates and measures do not establish one definitive current total.
How the Netflix adaptation widened discovery
The screen version gave audiences another way into the story. Oseman wrote and executive produced the first season, an eight-episode adaptation that closely follows the first two volumes. It debuted on Netflix on April 22, 2022, with Kit Connor as Nick and Joe Locke as Charlie. Oseman’s official history gives the debut date, while Netflix Tudum describes the season’s format and adaptation.
Rank #3
The University of Manchester’s 2026 summary says the Netflix release helped move the books into mainstream young-adult fiction and that sales grew in both English-speaking and non-English-speaking markets. In Brazil and Mexico, it reports, around 99% of sales were translated local-language editions. That finding points to reach beyond English-language readership, though the institutional summary should not be mistaken for the full study or a complete market-by-market dataset.
Who is reading the books?
According to the University of Manchester’s 2026 summary, nearly two-thirds of UK buyers were aged 13–24. UK buyers most commonly said they discovered the books through the adaptation, and around a quarter of purchases were gifts or bought for someone else. Those findings indicate a substantial young readership and appeal that extends to gift buyers, but they describe UK purchasing patterns—not every reader, every market or an entire generation.
That distinction is central to the title’s generational claim. Calling Heartstopper a defining or emblematic Gen Z publishing phenomenon is a reasoned interpretation of its young readership, international reach and screen-to-book momentum. The available figures do not measure whether it is the defining book for Gen Z as a whole.
