Hannah Berner said in May 2021 that she was leaving Summer House to pursue career opportunities and tour as a stand-up comedian. Years later, she described the exit as a firing tied to cast conflict and said a Truly Hard Seltzer ad helped spark one dispute. Those are different accounts: the ad’s role in the casting decision has not been independently established.
What Hannah Berner said when she left
On May 14, 2021, Berner announced that she would not return to the house for another summer. Her public explanation focused on career growth and comedy. She said that making people laugh brought her joy and announced plans to tour comedy clubs and theaters. Entertainment Tonight reported her announcement that day; Bravo’s retrospective identifies her departure as following Season 5.

In a June 2021 interview, Berner described the season as difficult, noted that she was engaged to comedian Des Bishop, and said she wanted to travel for stand-up. She characterized the choice as potentially having to “lose something in order to gain stuff that you want to have.” That interview supports her stated career and life motivations at the time; it does not reveal what production privately decided. Distractify published the interview on June 10, 2021.
Why she later described the exit differently
In July 2024, on the BFFs podcast, Berner said a dispute began after she did an advertisement for Truly Hard Seltzer and did not know she was not allowed to promote another drink. She said castmates were annoyed and that the disagreement grew into arguments involving egos and screen time. In the same appearance, she said Bravo did not fire her. This is Berner’s later account of how tensions developed, not independent confirmation of why the show’s casting decision was made. The podcast transcript records her comments.

In June 2026, Berner described being fired from both Summer House and Chat Room, saying the cast needed to get along and that she was the one cut. Us Weekly also reported that Kyle Cooke denied having control over casting: “I’m flattered anyone thinks I could have that kind of pull. But clearly, I don’t have any control over what Bravo does.” Us Weekly published the retrospective on June 8, 2026.

The distinction matters because a difficult season and visible cast disputes are context, not proof of what decision-makers privately did or why. The clearest answer is therefore two-part: Berner’s stated reason in 2021 was to focus on comedy and other opportunities; years later, she characterized the outcome as a firing amid cast conflict. The Truly ad is part of her later explanation of that conflict, not a confirmed cause of her departure.

What followed her departure
Berner’s comedy work and Giggly Squad became part of her public career after Summer House. A June 2026 Marie Claire interview discusses her subsequent comedy career, but does not independently resolve the casting question. Bravo’s April 2024 retrospective says Seasons 3–5 are available on Peacock; streaming availability can change by date and territory, so check the service’s current listing.
