Halsey’s “Lucky” pairs a chorus that interpolates Britney Spears’s 2000 song with a video that evokes Spears-era pop imagery. But the health story in the video and lyrics is Halsey’s: it reflects her own disclosed illness, not Spears’s. Spears was reported to have criticized the video before deleting the post and saying it was not hers; contemporaneous reporting also said Halsey had Spears’s blessing for the interpolation.
Why does Halsey’s “Lucky” look and sound like Britney Spears?
There are two distinct references. Musically, Halsey’s “Lucky” interpolates the chorus of Spears’s 2000 song of the same name. Visually, the video draws on Spears-era pop imagery. Sony Music Canada’s July 26, 2024 release announcement credits Gia Coppola as director and says Halsey wrote and stars in the video. Sony Music Canada’s announcement describes the interpolation; it does not establish a frame-by-frame comparison between the videos.

Whose health struggles does the video portray?
The health references concern Halsey, not Spears. The video depicts a performer receiving infusions and removing a wig to reveal a shaved head, while the lyrics refer to illness. Sony Music Canada reported that Halsey had disclosed diagnoses of lupus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder, diagnosed nearly two years earlier, and had struggled privately with her health. Those details are the context for reading the imagery as Halsey’s story.
Halsey had publicly acknowledged being ill before “Lucky” arrived. On June 4, 2024, she announced that she had been privately battling illness and released “The End.” The Associated Press reported that the diagnosis was not immediately clear at the time and quoted Halsey’s caption: “Long story short, I’m lucky to be alive.” The AP report provides that early timeline; the later diagnoses were reported by Sony Music Canada.

Did Britney Spears approve Halsey’s interpolation?
Variety reported that Halsey had previously said she would not interpolate “Lucky” without Spears’s blessing. That reported account supports the distinction between approval of the musical reference and the separate social-media episode that followed the video’s release. Variety’s report recounts both.
What did Britney Spears say about the video?
Variety reported that Spears initially criticized the video on social media, saying she felt “harassed, violated and bullied.” The post was deleted. Variety then reported a follow-up statement attributed to Spears: “Fake news !!! That was not me on my phone !!! I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it !!!” The reported sequence ends with that retraction, rather than establishing an ongoing feud. The statements are described here as Variety reported them; they are not presented as independently authenticated posts.
