Halle Berry changed her planned look for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival opening night because its long train did not comply with the festival’s updated dress rules. At a jury press conference on May 13, she said she would follow the rules and wore a Jacquemus gown instead, according to The Independent.
Why did Halle Berry change her Cannes outfit?
Berry said her planned Gaurav Gupta gown had a train that was too large for the rules. “I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” she said at the Cannes jury press conference on May 13, 2025, as reported by The Independent. The report identified her replacement as a Jacquemus gown.
She did not say the planned dress was too revealing. Its train was the reason she gave for changing outfits. Berry said, “I’m not going to break the rules,” and added that the nudity restriction was “probably a good rule.” The Associated Press quoted her describing the change simply: “I had to make a pivot.” (Associated Press)
What did the 2025 Cannes dress code say?
The Festival-Goer’s Charter for the 2025 edition is dated April 8 and marked as updated April 14. For gala screenings in the Grand Théâtre Lumière, it called for evening wear, defined as a long dress or tuxedo, while listing several alternatives. It separately prohibited nudity and voluminous outfits, especially long trains that could impede guest movement or complicate seating. The charter said Festival welcome teams could deny red-carpet access to people who did not respect the rules. Read the official Festival-Goer’s Charter.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Listed alternatives to a long evening dress included a little black dress, a cocktail dress, a dark-colored pantsuit, or a dressy top with black trousers.
- Elegant shoes or sandals were permitted with or without heels; a black or navy suit with a bow tie or dark tie was also listed.
- The charter’s restriction on trains concerned volume and practical access, not the separate prohibition on nudity.
The Independent reported that organizers updated the rules on the Monday before the 12-day festival began. The charter itself bears an April 8 date and an April 14 update date; the festival opened on May 13.
Was the rule enforced consistently on opening night?
The written charter gave welcome teams authority to deny red-carpet access for noncompliance. In its account of opening night, however, the Associated Press noted that some attendees wore voluminous outfits and were not removed from the carpet. That observation points to a difference between the policy’s stated enforcement power and what was visibly applied to every guest; it does not change what the charter said.

The Independent also quoted Festival press officers saying the aim was not to regulate attire generally but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in line with the event’s institutional framework and French law. That explanation is a reported spokesperson statement, distinct from the charter’s stated concerns about guest flow and theater seating.
