She trained for 12 years, began modeling at 16, and has said she did not see ballet as her career. Her accounts point to injuries as part of the story—not the sole reason she left dance.
Did an injury force Hailey Bieber to quit ballet?
Not according to her later account. In GQ’s Actually Me, Bieber responds to the claim that a foot injury ended her ballet training with, “That’s not entirely true.” She says, “I did ballet for 12 years” and “I did sustain several injuries being a dancer.” The interview supports that injuries were real, but not that one identified foot injury alone made her quit. GQ’s interview
In an earlier ELLE interview, Bieber described ballet as “hard on my body” and said, “I got hurt a lot.” Neither account names a specific diagnosis or says she was medically unable to continue. The injury explanation should therefore be framed as an important part of her experience, not a confirmed career-ending event.
Why did she stop dancing?
Bieber has described modeling and her sense of what she wanted for her future as central to the transition. In GQ, she says she started modeling at 16 and never saw herself being a ballet dancer as her whole career. ELLE reports that she quit ballet at 17 and did not see her future in dance. Those ages describe different milestones—starting modeling and quitting ballet—so they should not be collapsed into a single exact departure date.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did she ever wonder what might have happened if she had continued?
Yes. In the Vogue interview, Bieber says she still thinks about what might have been different, while acknowledging she cannot know whether she would have been happier on that path. That uncertainty makes her decision sound reflective rather than like a simple story of an injury abruptly ending a career.
