This was not simply a plan to “take on the Mughals.” It joined spiritual leadership with worldly responsibility and community protection.
What do miri and piri mean?
In Sikh tradition, Guru Hargobind is represented by two swords: one signifies piri, spiritual authority, and the other miri, temporal authority. The pairing expresses that spiritual life and responsibility for the community’s worldly affairs belong together. It does not mean that Sikh devotion was set aside in favor of political or military activity.
A peer-reviewed discussion of Sikh politics describes the change after Guru Arjan’s martyrdom as a reshaping of the Panth that balanced spiritual and temporal concerns. That is an interpretation of the historical development, not proof of one definitive motive for every action by the Mughal state. Read the article in Religions (2019).
How did the Akal Takht express this idea?
Guru Hargobind founded the Akal Takht opposite the Harmandir Sahib. The institution became associated with temporal authority and community leadership, giving miri-piri an institutional expression as well as a symbolic one. Why did Guru Hargobind introduce miri-piri?
Guru Arjan’s death is important background to the change associated with Guru Hargobind. The historical accounts considered here place his leadership amid political pressure and later armed conflict, but they do not establish a single, uncontested explanation for Mughal actions or reduce the shift to a declared strategy of fighting the empire.
The two swords and the Akal Takht are best understood together: the swords signify the joining of spiritual and temporal authority, while the institution and the armed capacity described in historical accounts show how community leadership could acquire practical force. The peer-reviewed discussion characterizes martial protection as part of the response to the circumstances facing the Panth.

What does “militarisation” mean in this context?
Accounts describe Sikh militia or organized armed capacity under Guru Hargobind. In context, this indicates a capacity for self-protection and political action; it does not establish that the community abandoned devotional life or that armed conflict was the sole purpose of his leadership.
The same peer-reviewed discussion reproduces Bhai Gurdas’s metaphor of “hedging the orchard of the Sikh faith with the hardy and thorny kikkar tree.” The image describes martial protection as a defense of the Sikh community. See the discussion in Religions (2019).

What evidence is there of conflict with the Mughals?
J.S. Grewal’s Cambridge University Press chapter summary reports armed conflict between Guru Hargobind and Mughal administrators during Shah Jahan’s reign. That supports describing the period as one of armed Mughal-Sikh conflict, but the chapter summary alone does not settle the cause, chronology, or details of every episode. See “Transformation of the Sikh Panth (1606–1708)” in The Sikhs of the Punjab.
The broader transformation covered the period from 1606 to 1708 and involved the Panth over time; it should not be treated as a process completed by Guru Hargobind alone. Grewal’s Cambridge chapter frames that longer history in relation to imperial interference. How should the traditional account be read?
Sikh tradition supplies the meaning of the two swords, while modern scholarship helps place the Akal Takht, armed organization, and conflict in their political setting. These sources support a careful conclusion: Guru Hargobind’s leadership is associated with combining spiritual authority and temporal responsibility and with strengthening the community’s ability to protect itself amid Mughal-Sikh tension. They do not justify assigning one simple motive to every imperial action or claiming that every event in the period is settled.
