Gary Burghoff reportedly asked to redo a farewell scene as Walter “Radar” O’Reilly after seeing a take in which he let the character break down in tears. The account comes from Burghoff’s recollections in the 2024 documentary M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever, as reported by Looper; it is not independently confirmed in the production accounts available here.
Why Burghoff reportedly asked for another take
In Looper’s account of the documentary, Burghoff initially saw Radar’s farewell as an opportunity for an unrestrained emotional moment. He recalled thinking, “What a wonderful moment! I can cry my eyes out, and I can do this wonderful, dramatic moment! I can just completely fall apart.” Director Charles S. Dubin reportedly advised him to hold back.

Burghoff said he watched the dailies the next day and disliked the result: “The next day, in dailies, I look at the screen — and it’s awful. I mean, it is just terrible.” He reportedly asked to shoot the moment again, and the request was granted. The report places the moment around Radar’s farewell in the mess hall, but does not establish precise blocking or that the broadcast version is a shot-for-shot replacement.
How the scene fits Radar’s departure
Burghoff played Radar throughout much of M*A*S*H and left the series in 1979, when his seven-year contract ended. In a 2022 Television Academy retrospective, he said he wanted more time with his family on the East Coast. “By the time I left, my career had become my life. I wanted to spend more time with my family on the East Coast in the countrified environment that I grew up in.”

Radar’s on-screen departure was told in the two-part episode “Goodbye Radar.” Co-writer Ken Levine wrote that the story had originally been scheduled to close season seven, then moved into season eight after the network arranged for Burghoff to return. Levine also recalled a separate disagreement: he and co-writer David Isaacs felt Radar looked older without his familiar hat. That costume discussion is distinct from the reported reshoot.

The reshoot detail should be understood as a secondary report of Burghoff’s documentary recollection. Looper attributes the account and quotations to M*A*S*H: When Television Changed Forever. The Television Academy Foundation’s oral-history archive lists an interview segment with Dubin about directing Burghoff as Radar, but the archive listing does not itself provide the reshoot passage. Levine’s firsthand episode account corroborates the two-part farewell and its scheduling history, not the retake anecdote.
