Galactus has no single fixed height in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). His apparent size changes from shot to shot, set by the environment he appears in and by the needs of each sequence. The production team’s own examples ran from about 2,000 feet aboard the World Ship to about 300 feet when he had to fit into Times Square, so “small” describes how he reads on screen in a particular moment, not a permanent measurement.
What the production team actually did
Production VFX supervisor Scott Stokdyk described the scale of Galactus as something the team adjusted to suit each environment and each sequence. The goal was to keep him at roughly the same scale across neighboring shots, while allowing that scale to differ, sometimes substantially, between different settings. In a 2025 interview with The Art of VFX (published September 18, 2025), Stokdyk gave two approximate figures as examples of this approach.
| Setting in the film | Approximate apparent scale cited by Stokdyk | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| The World Ship | About 2,000 feet | Galactus framed against a vast, ship-scale environment |
| Times Square | About 300 feet | Galactus reduced so he can share a street-level city space with buildings and people |
These are production examples from one interview, not a canonical character height. Stokdyk did not offer a single number meant to apply to every scene, and the film does not give Galactus a permanent size.
Why the scale is relative
The word “small” only makes sense in relation to what surrounds him. In the Times Square sequence, the audience reads his scale against skyscrapers, streets, and the Fantastic Four themselves. Stokdyk’s examples show that the production chose different scales for different places so that those interactions stay legible on screen. A figure that would be physically plausible on the World Ship would overwhelm a city street, and the reverse would make a planet-eater look like he was standing in a toy set.

Scale is a matter of screen composition, not power. The Art of VFX interview discusses how large Galactus appears in the frame, not how strong or threatening he is. Reading a smaller on-screen size as weakness misreads what the production was doing.
How the scale was built
Stokdyk said Galactus’s size was a discussion point from previsualization onward. The production approach had several parts:
Rank #2
- LEGO FANTASTIC FOUR BUILDING TOY – Fantastic Four vs. Galactus Construction Figure for boys and girls ages 9 and up is based on Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie
- 4 MINIFIGURES – Mr. Fantastic has extendable legs; Human Torch has hand blasters, feet flames and a flight prop; Invisible Woman has force shields; The Thing has extra-large hands
- LARGE GALACTUS FIGURE – The fully jointed model of the movie’s villain, Galactus, is highly posable to enable endless dynamic action as kids role-play battles with the Super Hero minifigures
- FIRST EVER FANTASTIC FOUR LEGO SET – This collectible construction toy is rewarding to build, fun to play with and impressive to display
- GIFT FOR KIDS – This versatile LEGO building set is a great gift idea for boys and girls who are fans of Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps and other Super Hero adventures
- Costume as the starting point. Ralph Ineson performed in a practical costume. The team planned photography as though the costumed actor were a 1/50-scale miniature, a choice Stokdyk described as part of how the shots were conceived.
- Framing experiments. The cinematographer and miniature-effects consultant Ian Hunter worked on framing tests, and the team tried different lenses, camera distances, and angles during previs.
- Scale adjusted by shot. Because the scale depended on the setting, Stokdyk described the method as “King Kong Rules”: the team cheated Galactus’s scale when needed, while avoiding large jumps in scale between surrounding shots in the same sequence.
- Digital model from a scan. The digital Galactus was based on a scan of the practical costume. According to ILM VFX supervisor Daniele Bigi, in an interview published September 2, 2025, ILM increased the model’s resolution for close-ups. Galactus was part of ILM’s major visual effects assignment on the film’s final battle.
The production explanation is therefore about staging and continuity. Stokdyk’s account does not say that the filmmakers chose these particular scales because of any comic-book rule about size.
Design roots and the character
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said Galactus’s look is based directly on Jack Kirby’s designs, and Stokdyk described the effort to honor Kirby’s elements in the digital model. Those statements explain the design, not the scale. The scale explanation comes from the production account above.

In a July 24, 2025 interview with The Walt Disney Company, Feige also described this version of Galactus as a planet-eater who is not evil. He compared the character to a great white shark, acting to survive. He also said: “He is not evil. He is a constant. He is, as Shalla-Bal [Garner] says in the movie, ‘as necessary as the stars.'” That is a characterization of the role Galactus plays in the story, not a statement about his size.

Before the film’s release, some readers asked the same question in trailer-era coverage. A February 9, 2025 ComingSoon explainer, headlined “Why Is Galactus So Small in The Fantastic Four: First Steps?”, proposed that Galactus’s ability to change size in the comics might account for the film’s scale. That was a speculative explanation offered by the outlet. The production interviews do not confirm it as the filmmakers’ reasoning.

What is and is not established
- Established: Galactus’s apparent size varies by environment and shot, with the team aiming for continuity between neighboring shots (Stokdyk, 2025).
- Established: The approximate figures of about 2,000 feet and about 300 feet are Stokdyk’s examples, not a universal measurement.
- Established: The digital model was based on a scan of the practical costume, and the design draws on Kirby’s work (Feige and Stokdyk, 2025).
- Not established: That comic-book size-changing was the filmmakers’ reason for the chosen scales. This remains an unconfirmed fan and trailer-era theory.
- Not established: Any measured audience response or independent study of how viewers perceive Galactus’s size.
If you want the source material behind the character’s look, the most useful starting point is a general search for Fantastic Four or Galactus comics from Marvel, which covers the Kirby-era designs that the film draws on.
For the film itself, the production interviews above are the most direct sources on how Galactus was scaled. Treat any single number as a sequence-level example rather than a fact about the character.
