Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis had a reported $4 million opening weekend, but the book promised in the headline cannot be identified from the available sources. The release figures document a difficult launch; they do not establish one definitive reason for it, and no identified book is verified as an explanation of the film’s box-office performance.
What the reported box-office figures show
The Associated Press reported that Megalopolis opened with $4 million and that Coppola bankrolled the film for $120 million. AP also reported a D+ CinemaScore, an audience-response measure from the film’s release period. These figures indicate a weak opening and a poor reported audience grade, but they are not a complete audited account of the film’s eventual revenue, costs, or profitability. Nor do they, by themselves, explain why audiences did or did not attend. Associated Press, 2024.

How the distribution path shaped the release context
AP reported that studios passed on the film after its Cannes premiere and that Lionsgate ultimately distributed it for a fee. That path is relevant context for how the film reached theaters, but it is not proof that the distribution arrangement caused its opening results. The available reporting does not establish a single causal explanation for the film’s performance.
Artistic ambition and commercial demand are different questions
Coppola described his creative approach as a willingness to challenge familiar expectations. In an interview with The Atlantic, he said, “Cinema is something that keeps changing,” and argued that viewers should be more accepting of films that differ from what they are used to. That statement helps explain how Coppola framed the film’s artistic aims; it does not demonstrate that those aims caused its box-office outcome. The Atlantic, 2024.

What retrospective commentary adds—and what it cannot prove
A 2025 Guardian retrospective considers Megalopolis in the context of a theatrical market changed by streaming. That framing can help readers think about the environment in which the film was released, but it is interpretation rather than proof that streaming, audience taste, marketing, or any other single factor explains the result. The Guardian, 2025.

No specific book that explains Megalopolis’s box-office performance has been identified. A search-result description for The Hollywood Hall of Shame presents it as a general book about costly film financial disasters, but does not establish that it covers Megalopolis. It should not be treated as a source for this film’s outcome without evidence of that coverage. The Hollywood Hall of Shame listing.
Rank #2
The most defensible conclusion is narrower than the headline’s promise: the release-period reporting establishes a low opening, Coppola’s reported financing, a D+ CinemaScore, and a distinctive distribution path. The sources offer context and commentary, not a demonstrated, singular cause or a verified explanatory book.
