Why Foster’s Australian Identity Is More Myth Than Truth

Foster’s Australian-themed UK advertising shaped British visitors’ expectations, but its branding, ownership, brewing location and popularity in Australia are different questions.

British visitors expected Australians to drink Foster’s because UK advertising sold it as “the Australian beer.” In Western Australia, they found Foster’s Lager in an imported section instead. The surprise makes sense once you separate the brand’s Australian identity from its ownership, where it is brewed, and how popular it is with Australian drinkers.

Why did British visitors expect Australians to drink Foster’s?

In an April 2025 report, PerthNow described British visitors’ surprise at finding Foster’s in an imported section in Western Australia. Visitor Chris Hutchinson said they expected Australians to drink it because, in the UK, it was marketed as “the Australian beer.” That was his account of their expectation, not proof of what Australians generally drink.

The expectation had a clear marketing source. A 2011 Marketing Week account described earlier UK Foster’s advertising with Australian-themed lines including “drink Australian, think Australian” and “get some Australian in you.” The slogan built a strong association between the beer and Australia for British consumers; it did not establish that the beer was a local favourite in Australia.

What is Australian about Foster’s—and what is not?

“Australian beer” can mean several different things: a beer’s historical identity, the country where a particular batch is brewed, the nationality of the company that owns the brand, or its popularity among drinkers in Australia. Those are separate questions.

PerthNow reported in April 2025 that Foster’s was brewed in Australia by Carlton and United Breweries, while the brand had been owned by Japan’s Asahi since 2020. That report supports an Australian production connection and Japanese ownership; one does not cancel out the other. It also does not establish where every Foster’s bottle or can sold in other countries is made.

Do Australians commonly drink Foster’s?

The available evidence points to a gap between the brand’s UK image and its historical standing in Australia, but it does not justify saying that Australians never drink Foster’s or establishing its current popularity.

Marketing Week reported that Foster’s accounted for 1% of the Australian beer market in 2011. Beer writer Roger Protz described Foster’s as a very minor brand in Australia in a 2015 commentary. Both are historical accounts, not current market research. No current Australian market-share figure is established here.

Where is Foster’s brewed for the UK market?

Protz wrote in 2015 that Foster’s sold in the UK was brewed in Britain by Heineken. That is a dated claim and should not be treated as a map of current production. The available reporting does not verify where every present-day can or bottle is brewed, either in the UK or across other markets. For a particular pack, its label is more relevant than a decades-old advertising slogan or a general brand description.
