Fawlty Towers was not shown to have been cancelled by the BBC. The clearest contemporary account is that John Cleese chose not to continue after two six-episode series, saying the production process was wearing and that he had got what he wanted from the show.
Was Fawlty Towers cancelled by the BBC?
The available records point to the series ending because its creators did not continue, rather than because the BBC cancelled it. The Television Academy lists 12 half-hour episodes across two BBC transmission runs: 19 September to 24 October 1975, and 19 February to 26 March 1979 (Television Academy). A formal BBC cancellation notice is not established by the cited accounts.
In a 1979 report, The Washington Post described the six episodes then being made as bringing the series total to 12, and reported that Cleese was saying goodbye to the character (The Washington Post, 1979).
What reason did John Cleese give?
Cleese, the programme’s creator, co-writer and star, described the strain of producing it and his own decision not to devote more of his life to it. In the 1979 Washington Post report, he said, “I react badly to the sausage machine aspect of it.” He also said, “I’m not prepared to sacrifice my life to ‘Fawlty Towers,’ successful as it is. I’ve got all I want.”

Those remarks are the strongest direct evidence for why he stopped. They explain his decision in his own terms; they are not a formal BBC explanation, nor proof that production demands were the sole consideration. In a 2016 ABC interview, Cleese said there were several reasons for leaving, though the excerpt does not list them (ABC, 2016).
How demanding was making the show?
The writing process offers context for Cleese’s comments, but does not by itself establish why the series ended. A 1994 Los Angeles Times retrospective reported that Cleese and his then-wife and co-star Connie Booth took six weeks to write each episode (Los Angeles Times, 1994). That later report helps illustrate the time involved in making the programme; it should not be treated as Cleese’s stated reason or as proof that workload alone decided its fate.

Did Connie Booth’s divorce from Cleese end the series?
The sources establish that Cleese and Booth collaborated on the show, but they do not establish that their divorce caused it to end. The more reliable account is the one Cleese gave at the time: he objected to the production process and felt he had got what he wanted from the programme. Claims that the BBC cancelled the series, that poor ratings forced its end, or that the divorce was decisive are not supported by these accounts.
