No creator or official Netflix source says that Ben Gross was modeled on B.J. Novak. The idea circulates among fans as an interpretation. The closest documented parallel points somewhere else: to the central couple of Mindy Kaling’s earlier series, The Mindy Project. This article explains where the Novak theory comes from, which parts of it have on-record support, and which parts remain inference.
What the creators have said about where the show came from
Lang Fisher, the co-creator and showrunner, has described the writers’ starting point as their own adolescence. The team considered what they had in common as teenagers and wanted a show built around a loud, big-personality girl. Fisher also said the writers drew on experiences from colleagues with immigrant parents while shaping stories about feeling different and wanting to fit in. In her words: “And so, you know, listening to kind of some of the interesting stories from those writers really helped us shape a lot of our stories.” That account, from a PBS On Story interview, describes the writers’ room, not any single real person behind a character.
Devi and Kaling’s childhood
TIME characterized Never Have I Ever as inspired by Kaling’s childhood, with Devi’s identity, family, school life and cultural tensions at the center of that framing. Men’s Health likewise stressed that the series is fiction while discussing details and experiences that Kaling and Devi share. Taken together, these reports support calling the show partly autobiographical, with the clearest mapping running to Devi. They do not extend that mapping to Ben.
Ben in the final season
The Forward’s critical reading of the final season treats Devi as a clear stand-in for Kaling and discusses Ben as a Jewish teenager whose father is a wealthy Hollywood executive. That is interpretation of how the character is built and how the show represents identity. It is not a statement from a creator about who Ben is based on.

Why Andy Samberg narrates Ben
A common source of confusion is the narrator. Andy Samberg voices Ben’s narration, and Fisher explained the choice in the PBS interview. Describing the casting, she said: “And like Andy I’ve worked with before at Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but you know for Ben it’s like, I think Andy kind of feels like maybe the person, like Ben would hope to grow up to be, and like is a little bit seems like a caretaker of him that sort of like feels like, ‘All right buddy, come on!'” That explains the tone of the narration. It does not identify a real-life model for Ben.
The Mindy Project parallel
The one on-record comparison that addresses Ben’s relationship with Devi comes from a 2022 Netflix Tudum cast Q&A. The report says that Jaren Lewison and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan “see shades of The Mindy Project’s central couple, Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) and Mindy Lahiri (played by Kaling herself), in Ben and Devi’s dynamic.” Two points matter here. First, this is the actors’ own reading of the relationship, reported by Netflix. Second, it compares two fictional couples. It says nothing about who Ben is modeled on.

Where the Novak theory comes from
The Novak idea is an inference built from several separate facts. Kaling and Novak worked together on The Office, a documented professional link that fans know well. Netflix reports that the cast saw Mindy and Danny’s dynamic in Ben and Devi. A reader who accepts the Mindy-and-Danny comparison, and who connects Kaling to a well-known male co-worker from her earlier career, can reasonably reach the Novak question. That chain is speculation. No reviewed source takes that final step.
The phrasing of the question also appears in public fan discussion. One thread asks whether Ben Gross is “based off” Novak. The same thread speculates about Kaling’s private life. This article does not repeat those personal claims, and they should not be treated as evidence about the character.

How the claims compare
| Claim | Source type and date | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Ben Gross is based on B.J. Novak | Public fan discussion; no creator or Netflix statement found | Unconfirmed fan theory |
| Devi’s story draws on Kaling’s childhood | TIME and Men’s Health coverage of the series | Reported as partly autobiographical; the show is described as fiction |
| Ben and Devi resemble Mindy and Danny | Netflix Tudum cast Q&A, 2022, quoting Lewison and Ramakrishnan | Actor-reported comparison between fictional dynamics |
| Andy Samberg narrates as a caretaker-like figure for Ben | PBS On Story interview with Lang Fisher | Creator’s explanation of the narration choice |
| Devi is a stand-in for Kaling | The Forward, final-season critical commentary | Critical interpretation, not a creator statement |
What remains open
None of the reviewed interviews with Fisher, the cast or Kaling names Novak in connection with Ben, and no statistic exists on how many viewers hold the theory. A direct on-record statement from a creator or writer would be the only thing that could move the question out of speculation. Until then, the defensible position is that Ben’s relationship dynamics have been compared to Kaling’s earlier series, while the Novak link remains a fan interpretation.
Readers who want to check the sources themselves should start with the PBS On Story interview with Fisher and the 2022 Netflix Tudum cast Q&A, since those are the two primary production-side statements discussed above.
