In early October 2025, some Crunchyroll viewers said subtitles on certain newly airing anime were harder to read and less integrated with on-screen text. Fans called the change a “subtitle downgrade,” but that label describes their criticism—not a confirmed, permanent change across the service. Crunchyroll said the reported problems on certain series came from internal system issues and had been resolved.
What viewers reported
In discussions about Fall 2025 anime premieres, viewers described less elaborate subtitle styling, text that was harder to distinguish, and translated signs or other on-screen writing that no longer seemed integrated into scenes. PiunikaWeb summarized examples raised in the discussion, while A.V. Club described reports of new premieres losing multi-position subtitle presentation. These accounts concern viewer observations, not an independent audit of every title, language, device, or region. PiunikaWeb’s report and A.V. Club’s coverage document the criticism.
Individual commenters described practical readability problems. One wrote, “I can hardly read the subtitles with this font. It’s small and sometimes blends with the background.” Another said the new subtitles “rendered some shows unwatchable.” Those comments illustrate what some viewers experienced; they do not establish how many viewers or titles were affected. The Reddit discussion also includes a later poster’s anecdotal update that some titles appeared to return to an earlier style while most new premieres still showed the newer format. That update does not establish the present state of the catalog.
What Crunchyroll said
In an October 7, 2025 update, A.V. Club reported a statement from a Crunchyroll representative. The company attributed delays and subtitle problems across certain series to internal system problems, and said the issues were resolved. It denied that they resulted from a change in subtitle creation, new vendors, or AI:

“Over the past few days, some users experienced delays in accessing the content they wanted and subtitle issues across certain series. These were caused by internal system problems — not by any change in how we create subtitles, use of new vendors or AI. Those internal issues have now been fully resolved.”
The representative also said, “Quality subtitles are a core part of what makes watching anime on Crunchyroll so special.” A.V. Club’s October 7 report attributes both statements to the company. This is Crunchyroll’s explanation, not independent confirmation of the cause or proof that every subsequent report was resolved. The available accounts do not verify either a permanent subtitle policy change or a complete catalog-wide restoration.

What to check if subtitles are missing or difficult to use
Check language and account preferences
- While watching, open the player settings and choose Subtitles/CC, then select the language you want. Crunchyroll’s subtitle-language instructions describe this player option.
- To set a default, update the subtitle language in your account preferences. The same Help Center page explains this account-level setting.
These checks can help when the selected language or preference is the problem; they will not repair a translation, styling, or typesetting defect. Crunchyroll notes that some Japanese-audio anime in some regions require subtitles to remain displayed.
Contact support about a missing or malfunctioning subtitle track
Crunchyroll’s web troubleshooting guidance says technical issues can affect subtitle behavior and that subtitle availability depends on regional licensing. If captions are missing or not working as expected, contact support and include the episode title, subtitle language, and your viewing location. Those details help distinguish a settings or delivery issue from a title or region availability question.
